Eagles looking to gain experience in opening event of the 2023-24 campaign

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The 2023-24 season is set to get underway for the Eastern Michigan University tennis team this weekend as the Eagles will travel to Normal, Ill., to compete in the 2023 Redbird Invitational. The eight-team event, which will take place Friday-Sunday, Sept. 29-Oct. 1, will be hosted by Illinois State University.
 
The event field features four teams from the Missouri Valley Conference, including the host Redbirds, the Braves of Bradley University, the Beacons of Valparaiso University, and the Flames of the University of Illinois-Chicago. Along the with Eagles out of the Mid-American Conference, the remaining teams including the Tommies of the University of St. Thomas (Minnesota) out of the Summit League; the Chicago State University Cougars out of the Horizon League; and the Panthers of Eastern Illinois University from the Ohio Valley Conference.
 
The event will not only be the first of the season for the Eagles, but also will be first for the program under the direction of Head Coach Ryan Kucera, who was hired to lead the program Aug. 9. His first roster will feature nine players, eight of whom return from last year's squad, and the addition of freshman Ksyusha Saenko (Voronezh, Russia/Gymnasium 2), who signed with the program shortly after Kucera's hiring.
 
Returning for the Eagles is all-conference standout Daniella Shved (Holon, Israel/Ort Holon), who is one of three sophomores on the roster this year. She is joined by classmates Regina Mendez (Los Cabos, Mexico/Picacho McGregor) and Wendy Zhang (Beijing, China/Crnjanski Gimnzija (Serbia)).
 
The Eagles will have a pair of senior leaders on the roster, including Linda Eloundou (Yaounde, Cameroon/Augustine Meyou/New Mexico Military Academy) and Andrea Quinorz (Lima Peru/La Molina 1278/Alcorn State) with the rest of the roster rounded out by a trio of juniors in Sabina Brichackova (Cheb, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Jana Blahoslava), Vidisha Reddy (Hyderabad, Israel/Villa Marie/Edinboro), and Prema Vichare (Mumbai, India/Narsee Monjee College of Commerce & Economics).
 
The Eagles return to action Thursday, Oct. 12, when they travel north to East Lansing, Mich., to compete in the ITA Midwest Regional Championships hosted by Michigan State University. The event will featured bracketed singles and doubles tournaments with the victors in each earning berths into the ITA National Championships that will be held in November.
