Holland tallies first career clean sheet in Eagles’ MAC opener
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Freshman Kate Robinson (Madison Heights, Mich./Lamphere) netted a game-winning penalty kick in the 73rd-minute to push the Eastern Michigan University soccer team past Central Michigan University to open the Eagles' Mid-American Conference slate while redshirt freshman Ella Holland (Dunwoody, Ga./Dunwoody/Samford) recorded her first career clean sheet Thursday at the CMU Soccer/Lacrosse Complex.
How It Happened
Eastern controlled much of the first half, earning a pair of back-to-back corner kicks in the 22nd-minute, resulting in a shot from Robinson, but CMU's keeper made the stop. The Eagles created another dangerous chance in the 31st-minute as freshman Olivia Sipsock (Medina, Ohio/Medina) had a shot saved and junior Meagan Lukowski's (Bay City, Mich./Bay City Western) rebound attempt was corralled by the Chippewa keeper.
After outshooting the Chippewas, 7-2, in the opening 45 minutes, Eastern appeared to have taken the lead in the 64th-minute off a Robinson corner, but the referee waved off the Eagles' goal due to a foul.
In the 73rd-minute, senior Tiffanie Hollingsworth (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon East) drew a foul inside the box to earn the Eagles a penalty kick. Robinson's attempt rocketed off the inside of the crossbar into the back of the net to put EMU ahead, 1-0.
A last-ditch effort in the 87th-minute by the Chippewas was stopped by Holland for her fourth save of the contest.
