Eagles set for 13 games, 12 before MAC play begins, including six at home

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team will play 13 non-conference games in its 2023-24 season, Head Coach Stan Heath announced today, Aug. 8. The Eagles, who will play six of those games inside the George Gervin GameAbove Center, will see 12 of their non-conference games come ahead of the Mid-American Conference season, which begins in early January, with the final non-conference game schedule for early February. That game, including the opponent and location, will be announced later in the year and will be part of the inaugural MAC-SBC Challenge.

Quick Notes
» EMU's 13-game non-conference schedule consists of 12 games to be played ahead of the conference season and one in February with the opponent and location to be determined as part of the MAC-SBC Challenge.
» The 13 games will see Eastern play at home six times, on the road six times, and at a neutral location once.
» Eastern will play four Michigan schools, including home games with Lake Superior State University and Oakland University and road trips to the University of Detroit Mercy and the University of Michigan.
» The games with seven of EMU's foes will be the first, second, or third meetings in the all-time series.
» The Eagles will play three foes for the first time in program history, including Butler University, Georgia Southern University, and the University of Central Arkansas, and will meet Florida Atlantic University and the University of North Dakota for just the second time each.
» The game at Michigan will mark EMU's first game inside the Crisler Center since its 45-42 victory, Dec. 9, 2014.
» EMU's home opener with Georgia Southern will be part of the inaugural MAC-SBC Challenge. The Eagles will play another SBC foe on the road later in the season.
» The Eagles will travel to Boca Raton, Fla., Nov. 14 to face FAU, who advanced to the NCAA Final Four last year.

Eastern will lift the lid on its 127th varsity season with a road game, Nov. 6, at Butler, the first of three, first-time opponents the Eagles will face in 2023. Following the game inside historic Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind., the Eagles will return to Ypsilanti to open their home slate with a visit from Georgia Southern, Nov. 11. The first meeting between the two Eagles will also be the first game in the MAC-SBC Challenge that will see EMU travel to an SBC foe in February while GSU will play host to a MAC opponent, both of which will be determined in January.

Eastern returns to the road, Nov. 14, as its heads to Boca Raton, Fla., for a meeting with the Owls of Florida Atlantic. Last year, the Owls made a magical run to the NCAA Final Four as a nine seed in the event. Four days later, Nov. 18, the Eagles return home once again, this time to renew its series with the Vikings of Cleveland State University. The last time the two teams met was an 81-69 home win for EMU exactly 10 years prior, Nov. 18, 2013.

The Eagles will close out the month of November with a trio of games away from Ypsilanti, starting with a trip into Detroit, Nov. 21, to face the Titans of UDM. The game will mark the first time Eastern has played inside Callahan Hall since its 55-51 win, Dec. 7, 2019. The final two games of the month follow in Conway, Ark., with the Eagles facing host UCA Nov. 25 before closing out the trip with a neutral site contest with North Dakota, Nov. 26. The game with the Bears will be the first in program history while the Eagles will look to avenge a loss in its only previous meeting with the Fighting Hawks, a 54-49 setback at the Basketball Travelers Invitational at Idaho State, Dec. 4, 2010.

The Eagles have five games slated for December with all five coming in Washtenaw County. The month opens Dec. 1 with the Eagles playing host to Lake Superior State for just the third time in program history and the first time since a 77-68 victory, Dec. 30, 1992, in Ypsilanti. One week later, the Golden Grizzlies of Oakland will come to town for the first time since Dec. 6, 2017, a 95-89 victory for EMU.

Eastern returns to the road Dec. 16 with a trip down the street into Ann Arbor for a meeting with Michigan. The last time the two times met inside the Crisler Center was Dec. 9, 2014, a 45-42 upset win for the Eagles over the Wolverines. The month closes with games against the Hampton University Pirates, Dec. 21, and Northwood University, Dec. 30.

A full conference schedule will be announced by the MAC at a later date.
