Gymnastics ranked ninth nationally in team GPA

ITHACA, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics program had 16 student-athletes earn Scholastic All-American status for the 2022-23 season as named by the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA), the organization announced today, Aug. 17.

The team ranked ninth in the country out of the 84 participating institutions with a collective grade-point-average (GPA) of 3.7400. Only two other Mid-American Conference programs ranked in the Top-10 with Northern Illinois University  coming one spot above the Eagles in eighth (3.7552), and Western Michigan University claiming the seventh spot (3.7558).

Individually, the student-athletes to earn the honor were Hadyn Crossen (Carmel, Ind./Carmel), Hannah Hartung (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln East), Molly Parris (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson), Mickayla Stuckey (Union City, Ind./Indiana Connections Academy), Mayleigh Vanderbeek (Holland, Mich./Zeeland East-Central Michigan), Raisa Boris (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center), Katie Butler (Avon, Ohio/Magnificat), Sophia Rios (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt), Gianna Antonio (Novi, Mich./South Lyon East), Cassie Bergin (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip), Ella Chemotti (Canton, Mich./Canton), Emma Lewis (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central), Jordan Jankowski (Frisco, Texas/Independence), Anna Grace McCullough (Birmingham, Ala./Briarwood Christian), Kyrie Lowe (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista), and Trinity Macy (Rowlett, Texas/Texas Connections Academy/Pittsburgh).

Overall, 1,075 student-athletes earned a 3.5 or higher GPA on a 4.0 scale, (68.65% of all reporting gymnasts), and the second most ever by total number and percentage (since 2008). There were 228 (14.56%) student-athletes with a 4.0 GPA. This was the third year in a row with more than 1,000 Scholastic All-America winners, and four of the top five universities broke into the lineup for the first time. Across all gymnasts this year, the average GPA was 3.5685, which is the third highest (since available records in 2015), 54 institutions had a team GPA of a 3.5 or better, and in seven of the last eight years, at least one institution each year has had 100% of its athletes qualify for this prestigious award.

"Once again, our student-athletes continue to pursue excellence in the classroom at an incredibly high level. To see such amazing academic results, year in and year out, shows how dedicated our gymnasts are in all areas of their college experience," Melanie Hall, WCGA Chair of the Board and Head coach at Cornell University, said. "Across all conferences and divisions, the passion, grit, determination and constant time management skills our athletes display, is truly inspiring."
