Hugo Racks Up Three Extra Base Hits in Loss to Central Michigan

5/6/2023 4:23:00 PM | Baseball

Miller and Kross added two RBIs each

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Sophomore Logan Hugo (Essexville, Mich.-Essexville Garber) collected three extra base hits, but the Eastern Michigan University baseball team fell to Central Michigan University, 24-4, in Mid-American Conference action Saturday, May 6, at Theunissen Stadium.

Senior Luke Russo (Howell, Mich.-Howell) (5-3) started and took the loss on the mound for Eastern Michigan (22-22, 8-15 MAC).

Hugo's three extra base hits were the highlight of a 3-for-4 day and included three doubles. Senior Glenn Miller (Pentwater, Mich.-Pentwater-Spring Arbor) compiled a standout day at the plate as well, going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Sophomore Josh Kross (Brunswick, Ohio-Brunswick-Toledo) also chipped in for the Eagles, putting together one hit in five trips to the plate while adding a double and two RBI.

How it Happened
The Eagles were trailing 14-0 in the fifth inning when they first put runs on the board. Eastern Michigan got on the board thanks to Miller's RBI double with two outs.

The Chippewas expanded their lead to 20-1 before the Eagles offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the seventh. Eastern Michigan scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Miller, which brought the score to 20-2 in favor of the Chippewas.

Central Michigan expanded their lead to 24-2 before the Eastern Michigan offense got going, reducing that lead to 24-4 in the ninth. The Eagles drove two runs across on a two-run double off the bat of Kross that brought home graduate student Kyle Schroedle (Redding, Calif.-University Prep-Crown College) and junior Cory Taylor (Shelbyville, Ind.-Shelbyville). The ballgame ended with that ninth inning rally falling short.

Game Notes
» Hugo ripped a double to right center field in the third inning, marking his sixth double and 12th extra-base-hit of the 2023 regular-season. The sophomore would roped another double down the left field line in the fifth. Hugo doubled yet again, this time in the seventh inning. This marks the first three extra-base-hit performance of the Essexville, Mich. native's collegiate baseball career. Moreover, after finishing his freshman season with five total extra-base-hits, Hugo has nearly tripled that number with 14 so far in his sophomore campaign.
» Taylor Hopkins (Mason, Ohio-Archbishop Moeller) singled through the left side of the infield in the second inning for his 59th knock of the season. This brings the shortstop's hit total to 216 in his Eastern Michigan career, making him just 17 away from former Eagle, Lee Longo (2011-14) for fifth in EMU baseball history. Also, with three at-bats in today's contest, Hopkins tied former Eagle Brent Ohrman (2009-14) for third all-time in Eastern Michigan history with 772 at-bats.
» Miller doubled down the right field line in the fifth, scoring Hugo and marking the senior's 13th double and 23rd RBI of the season. Moreover, the third baseman extended his team-long hitting streak to six straight games Saturday afternoon. The Pentwater, Mich. native singled and scored Hugo again in the seventh inning. With two hits and two RBIs in today's contest, Miller recorded his 16th multi-hit performance and fourth multi-RBI outing of the season, respectively.
» Sophomore pitcher Cam'Ron McCoy (St. Louis, Mo.-St. Mary's) had himself a nice relief outing. Coming in to relieve Joe Grassi (Holidaysburg, Penn.-Holidaysburg Area-Harford C.C.) in the seventh inning, McCoy tossed 1.1 innings and tied a career high with two strikeouts.
» The 6-foot-4 left-handed pitcher Grant Reising (Canton, Mich.-Divine Child-Missouri) pitched 0.2 innings, recording both of his outs via strikeout. This ties the Sophomore's career high as he also struck out two versus Miami University, April 8, 2023.
» Kross smoked a double down the right field line in the top of the ninth, scoring two Eagle base runners. The extra-base-hit goes down as the switch hitter's 26th of the season and brings his RBI total up to 57.

Historical Notes
» Saturday afternoon's contest marked the 178th all-time meeting between the Eagles and Chippewas. After today's game, Eastern Michigan still holds the all-time edge in the series with a 96-82 record after today's contest.
