CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University baseball student-athlete Matt Kirk (Milford, Ohio-Milford-Cypress-Toledo) was named the Mid-American Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the league office announced today, May 3.

Kirk continued to turn heads nationally this week, putting together one of the best three-game stretches in the nation against Alma College, April 25, and Niagara University, April 28-29. The Milford, Ohio, native hit an incredible .500, with more extra-base hits than singles, and a slugging percentage of 1.064.

Moreover, he led Eastern Michigan to a perfect week, and the team has now won five consecutive games, a streak that started when Kirk hit a grand slam, walk-off home run against the University of Toledo last Sunday. Kirk's impressive week included an Eastern Michigan-record four doubles in the team's game against the Purple Eagles, April 29. That number is also tied for the most among any NCAA Division I player this season, and has only been accomplished five times total in 2023.

Kirk, who posted an EMU single-season record and led the nation with 25 doubles a season ago, already has 22 this season, a number which now ties the national leaderboard. Kirk's hit total (61) is more than double that of his strikeout total (25).

Eastern heads to Mount Pleasant, Mich., for a critical Mid-American Conference series against Central Michigan University. The three-game set will commence Friday, May 5, with games also set for Saturday, May 6, and Sunday, May 7.

EMU has won five consecutive games, dating back to a 12-11 win over the Toledo, April 23. The stretch also includes a win over Alma, April 25, and a trio of victories over Niagara, April 28-30. The current stretch is the second-longest win streak for the Eagles this season. The team previously won six straight between March 3-11.

Fueled by offense during its latest hot streak, Eastern has scored an average of 12 runs per game over its last five, up from a 7.6 runs per game average in games prior to the streak.
