The duo become the 25th and 26th former Eagles to earn a NFL mini-camp invites in the Creighton era
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Another pair of former Eastern Michigan University football players will have a chance to continue their playing career, as wide receiver Dylan Drummond (Cleveland, Ohio-Cuyahoga Falls) and quarterback Taylor Powell (Fayetteville, Ark.-Fayetteville-Missouri-Troy) received NFL minicamp invitations following the NFL Draft. Drummond will head to Allen Park to join the Detroit Lions, while Powell will be with the Carolina Panthers.
Yesterday, it was announced that two other players from EMU's 2022 roster also earned mincamp invites. Wide receiver Hassan Beydoun (Dearborn, Mich.-Dearborn) and tight end Gunnar Oakes (Swanton, Ohio-Swanton) will join the New York Jets, and Atlanta Falcons, respectively.
Since 2015, Eastern football has had five players drafted and 26 more sign free-agent or minicamps deals.
One of the most consistent players in EMU football history, Drummond finished his EMU career with 52 games played, which ties for the fourth most in program history, just two behind the all-time record of 56 (Sidy Sow - 2018-22). The Cleveland, Ohio native hauled in 183 career receptions for 2,028 yards and 14 touchdowns. His 64 passes caught in 2021 is the ninth-best single-season total in program history, while his total receptions put him fourth all-time at EMU.
Powell joined the Eagles ahead of the 2022 season and helped lead Eastern Michigan on a historic run to nine wins, the second-most in program history, as well as a postseason bowl win for the first time since 1987. The Fayetteville, Ark. native completed 174-of-269 passes for 2,111 yards and 16 touchdowns.
For the first time since 1977, multiple EMU football student-athletes had their dreams come true at the 2023 NFL Draft held outside of Union Station in Kansas City, Mo., April 27–29. Offensive lineman Sidy Sow (Bromont, Quebec-J-H Leclerc-Champlain Lennoxville) was selected by the New England Patriots in the fourth round (117th overall), while defensive end Jose Ramirez (Lake Alfred, Fla.-Auburndale-Arizona-Riverside City) was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the sixth round (196th overall).
The duo marked the first time in 46 years that multiple EMU players have been drafted in the same season. That year, Mark Carter went to the Miami Dolphins in the 10th Round (264 overall) and Jim Stansik headed to the San Diego Chargers in the 12th Round (319 overall).
