How it Happened
Trailing 1-0, the Eagles first put runs on the board in the second inning. Sophomore Logan Hugo (Essexville, Mich.-Essexville Garber) came across to score the lone run of the inning for Eastern Michigan and get them on the board.
The score stayed at 1-1 until the very next inning, when the Eagles put runs on the scoreboard once again. Eastern Michigan pushed across a run on Hopkins' two-out RBI double, which brought the Eagles lead to 2-1.
Eastern Michigan's lead had disappeared once the fourth inning arrived and turned into a 4-2 Michigan State advantage, when the Eagles re-gained control at 5-4. The Eagles picked up three runs in the frame, two of them coming across on a two-run homer from Dolney.
Eastern Michigan lost the lead they built in the fourth, but got back on the scoreboard in the sixth trailing 8-5. The Eagles recorded a run on McRae's one-out solo dinger off sophomore Dominic Pianto, tightening the Michigan State lead to 8-6.
Michigan State built on their lead to 10-6 before the Eagles offense got rolling, evening up the outing at 10 in the eighth. The Eastern Michigan offense piled up four runs, highlighted by a three-run home run off the bat of Hopkins. Michigan State then scored one time over the remaining two innings to break the tie and grab the 11-10 win.
Game Notes
» With a leadoff walk to start the game for Eastern Michigan, Glenn Miller (Pentwater, Mich.-Pentwater-Spring Arbor) has reached base in 20 consecutive games, the longest streak of the season by an Eagle batter. In EMU's upcoming game versus Kent State University, Friday, May 12, Miller will attempt to tie former Eagle Daniel Warkentin, who reached base in 21 straight games in the 2022 season. With a double to left center to kick off the Eagles half of the third inning, the Pentwater, Mich. native recorded his 14th two-bagger of the season, marking his eighth straight game with a hit. The third base man is now one game away from tying his season long hitting streak of nine consecutive games, April 8-19.
» Hopkins shot a double down the right field line in the top of the third, scoring Miller and putting the Green and White up 2-1 at the time. Hopkins' third inning extra-base-hit goes down as his 10th double of the season, and 42nd RBI. Driving in one run in Eastern's previous game, versus Central Michigan University, May 7, the Mason, Ohio native has notched an RBI in consecutive games for the ninth time in the 2023 campaign. With his third inning double, Hopkins joins fellow Eagles Matt Kirk (Milford, Ohio-Milford-Cypress-Toledo), Josh Kross (Brunswick, Ohio-Brunswick-Toledo), Cory Taylor (Shelbyville, ind.-Shelbyville), and Miller as EMU batters with double-digit two-baggers this season. Next, the shortstop crushed a three-run shot to right center field in the top of the eighth, tying the game at 10 runs a piece at the time. The homer marked Hopkins' ninth of the season, a career high as the then senior tallied eight home runs in the 2021 season. Lastly, Hopkins finished the night with four RBIs for the third time this season. He also recorded four driven in versus Northern Kentucky University, Feb. 19, and Towson, March 3.
» Dolney sent a ball over the right field wall of McLane Stadium and into the Red Cedar River in the fourth inning Wednesday evening. The homer counts as the catcher's ninth of the season and brings his RBI total to 35. Now with nine long balls on the season, Dolney is one home run away from tallying double-digit homers for the first time in his Eastern Michigan career as he sent seven out of the park last year in the 2022 season. Along with the Eagles as a whole, The Plymouth, Mich. product has greatly improved his base running ability this season, recording his tenth stolen bag Wednesday night after not stealing a base last season.
» Kirk flied out to center field in the fourth inning, scoring Kyle Schroedle (Redding, Calif.-University Prep-Crown College) for EMU's fourth run of the game, and Kirk's 43rd driven in this season. The Milford, Ohio native is now up to 92 RBIs in his Eastern Michigan career (2022-Pres.), making the slugging graduate student eight away from reaching the century mark.
» Taylor tattooed a double down the left field line in the seventh inning for his 11th two-bagger and 18th extra-base-hit of the 2023 campaign.
» Tyler Helgeson (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) came in to relive Cam'Ron McCoy (St. Louis, Mo.-St. Mary's) in the fourth inning Wednesday night. In his 16th appearance this season, the senior tied a season-high with two strikeouts. This marks the fourth time doing so, as the Portage, Mich. native also sat down two versus Towson University, March 3, Bowling Green State University, April 15, and Alma College, April 25.
» Kross finished the day 2-for-5 at the plate with an RBI and run scored. The sophomore first baseman now has 25 multi-hit games and 59 RBIs this season. His 59 driven are good for second in the Mid-American Conference.
» Schroedle doubled to center field in the top of the ninth marking the graduate student's eighth double of the season.
» Darren Kraft (Mount Pleasant, S.C.-Oceanside Collegiate Academy) tallied two hits and a run scored tonight, marking the Mount Pleasant, S.C. native's ninth multi-hit game of the season.
» The Eagles scored 10 runs tonight marking the 13th time the Green and White have plated double-digit runs this season. EMU now has an 11-2 record this season when scoring 10 or more runs.
