The Eagles picked up a win in doubles and two singles points

BUFFALO, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team was on the road Sunday, April 23, to close its 2023 regular season with a match at the University at Buffalo. Although the Eagles battled hard, they ultimately came up short, 5-2.

Eastern Michigan (6-9, 3-7 MAC) finishes their 2023 slate with six victories, including a trio of wins over Mid-American Conference foes. The season was the first under Head Coach Steve Schram.

How it Happened
Eastern Michigan got the day started with doubles, and although it was unable to capture the point that was up for grabs, the Eagles did find success at the No. 2 position, where the duo of Daniella Shved (Holon, Isreal-ORT Holon) and Wanyi Zhang (Bejing, China-Crnjanski Gimnzija (Serbia)) picked up a 6-4 victory.

In singles, it was Shved who again picked up another win for the Green and White, this time in the No. 2 slot. After winning the first set, 6-4, Shved was tested in the second. Tied at six games apiece, it was Shved that came through with a dominant, 7-1, tiebreak win to claim the match in straight sets.

Meanwhile, Zhang was equally as impressive at the No. 3 spot, where she also claimed a straight-set victory. The first-year Eagle routed her competition, 6-0, in the first set, before finishing off UB's challenger, 7-5, in the second.

Match Notes
» Shved closes the 2023 spring campaign with a team-best 12-2 mark in singles play. Her total wins (12), and win percentage (86%) are both team-bests for the first-year Eagle.
» With her victory today, Zhang notched her eighth singles victory of the spring season. That number is good for the third-most of any Eagle. She finished the year with seven of those victories in the No. 3 slot for the Eagles.
» The doubles team of Zhang ad Shved was the most successful pairing for the Eagles in 2023, winning a team-best eight matches together. The duo accounted for 57 percent (8-of-14) of the team's overall doubles wins, and was the only pairing to win more than four matches as a team.

Historical Notes
» Eastern Michigan's 2023 campaign has come to a close. The Eagles finished 6-9 overall including a 3-7 mark in conference play.
» Schram finished his first season as the Eastern Michigan head coach with six victories. Schram now holds an all-time head coaching record of 126-58, a .685 all-time win percentage as a head coach.

Up Next
The Eagles will enjoy time off before preparations for the 2024 fall slate. A full schedule of activities will be made available at a later date.
