Baseball Completes Largest Comeback Since 2017, Sweeps Towson

The Green and White eliminated a six-run deficit to claim the 11-6 victory

TOWSON, Md. (EMUEagles.com) --The Eastern Michigan University baseball team fought back from a 6-0 deficit to force extra innings before securing an 11-6 victory  (11 innings) over the Towson University Tigers Sunday, March 5, inside Schuerholz Park.

The win, which goes down as Eastern's (6-4, 0-0 MAC) largest single-game comeback since 2017, is the fourth in a row for the Eagles, and completed the four-game sweep over Towson (2-10, 0-0 CAA).

Senior Trevor House (Okeana, Ohio.-Ross) (1-1) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Eastern Michigan. The left-hander went three shutout innings without giving up a hit, allowing one walk and striking out two. Junior Dylan Wolff (Joliet, Ill.-Joliet West-Kankakee C.C.) also made an impact on the mound for the Eagles, throwing 4.2 scoreless innings while allowing two hits, with three walks and one strikeout.

Sophomore Josh Kross (Brunswick, Ohio-Brunswick-Toledo) led the way offensively for the Eagles, going 3-for-5 in the ballgame with three RBIs. Junior Cory Taylor (Shelbyville, Ind.-Shelbyville) provided a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 2-for-3 with two walks and an RBI. Senior Glenn Miller (Pentawater, Mich.-Pentawater-Spring Arbor) also contributed, going 1-for-5 for Eastern Michigan with a double and two RBIs.

How it Happened
Trailing 6-0, the Eagles first put runs on the board in the fifth inning. Eastern Michigan's offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a two-run double off the bat of Miller.

The Eagles kept the deficit at 6-4 before tying the score in the seventh. Eastern Michigan picked up two runs when a single from Kross scored Taylor and graduate student Matt Kirk (Milford, Ohio.-Milford-Cypress-Toledo), which brought the score level at 6-6.

That 6-6 tie turned into an 11-6 Eastern Michigan lead in the eleventh. The Eagles bats heated up in the inning, scoring five runs, including a two-run single off the bat of senior Aaron Dolney (Plymouth, Mich.-Detroit Country Day-Nebraska-Hillsborough C.C.). The score remained 11-6 for the rest of the game, as Eastern Michigan coasted to the win.

Game Notes
» After failing to score in the first four innings, Taylor got the Eagles on the scoreboard with a single through the left side of the infield to score Kyle Schroedle (Redding, Calif.-University Prep-Crown College), trimming the Towson lead to five, making it 6-1. The RBI goes down as Taylor's 10 in his career. With today's RBIs, Taylor has now notched at least one RBI in four of the last five games, the best stretch for Taylor in his career.
» Miller cut into the Towson lead in the top half of the fifth when he rocketed a double to right-field. Scoring Taylor and Cole Wilcox (Shiocton, Wisc.-Shiocton-Lake County), Miller would score as well due to an error by the Towson center fielder. The play would officially go down as a two-RBI-double. The double was Miller's second on the season along with his first RBIs of the season. This marks Miller's first multiple RBI game since the then-sophomore also drove in two in a 14-10 win versus Miami University, Apr. 10, 2022.
» Kross stepped up in the clutch by knocking a two-RBI single in the top half of the seventh inning, scoring Kirk and Taylor. The runs were the fifth and sixth unanswered EMU runs in today's contest, respectively. Kross is second on the team in batting average (.371) and second on the team in RBIs(12).
» After notching his first EMU-career hit and RBIs yesterday, Wilcox built upon that performance by  drilling three hits for the Green and White, one of which being an extra-base hit. The three-hit performance marks the first of Wilcox's EMU career, and is tied for the best single-game total by any Eagle this season.
» Entering the game in the bottom half of the ninthHouse shut down the Towson offense for the remaining three innings. The senior left-hander did not allow a single hit and struck-out two en route to his third career victory.

Historical Notes
» Today's 11-6 comeback win marks Eastern Michigan's fourth consecutive win. The four wins is the longest win-streak for the Eagles since they rattled off eight straight victories May 1-11, 2021.
» Today marks the largest deficit overcome to win (6) for Eastern Michigan since they fell behind by the same margin, 7-1, before rallying to defeat Fresno State University, 15-11, March 10, 2017, in Fresno, Calif.
» The Eagles got down 6-0 in today's contest before reeling off 11 straight runs, eventually pulling off the comeback to win 11-6. Today's 11 unanswered runs are the most unanswered runs for the Eagles since they scored 13 unanswered in a 20-5 blowout victory versus St. Bonaventure, May 1, 2021.
» Today's victory grants EMU their first series sweep of the 2023 campaign, and their first series sweep since May 7-8, 2021, when they swept a four-game set on the road versus the Bowling Green University Falcons.
» Eastern Michigan won four games this weekend, marking just the third time the team has picked up four wins in a single weekend since 2003. The Eagles defeated the University of Akron and Oakland University, two games each, April 11-13, 2003, and also defeated Bowling Green State University in four straight, May 7-8, 2021, prior to this weekend.

Up Next
The Eagles will head back to the mitten state for a short, one-day rest before they travel to Rochester, Mich. to take on the Oakland University Golden Grizzlies, Tuesday, March 7 at 2:30p.m. ET.
