Four Eagles received the honor
CLEVELAND, Ohio - Four Eagles were named to The 2022-23 Mid-American Conference Academic All-MAC teams, the league office announced Thursday, March 30. Natalia Pineda (Miami, Fla.-John A. Ferguson), Ce'Nara Skanes (Oklahoma City, Okla.-Putnam City West), Lachelle Austin (Redford, Mich.-Wayne Memorial), and Kyndal Lewis (Belton, Mo.-Belton) were four of 66 student-athletes across the MAC that earned the distinction.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
Northern Illinois and Western Michigan each placed nine student-athletes on the list, the most of any MAC school. Kent State followed with eight, while Ball State and Toledo had seven representatives each. Bowling Green and Akron placed six on the list with Miami putting up five honorees. EMU was honored with four, while Ohio named three and Central Michigan named two to round out the list.
The accolade is Pineda's fourth consecutive during her five seasons at EMU. The Miami native was first named to the list as a sophomore when she appeared in 29 games and made seven starts for the Green and White. From there, Pineda became a pivotal role player for the Eagles both on and off the court earning the distinction three more times following her sophomore season.
For Skanes, the honor is her third after earning it in her second and third seasons at EMU. Having to redshirt her first season as an Eagle due to injury, the Oklahoma native has made a name for herself within the MAC as she recieved Third Team All-MAC Honors in 2020-21 and then was named to the Honorable Mention team following her performance in the 2022-23 campaign.
New to the list was both Austin and Lewis.
