Baseball Battles Back, Falls at Butler, 9-7

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University baseball team got contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, but the Eagles fell to the Butler University Bulldogs 9-7 Tuesday, in Indianapolis.

Junior Dylan Wolff (Joliet, Ill.-Joliet West- Kankakee C.C.) (0-1) took the loss on the mound for Eastern Michigan (10-7, 4-2 MAC). Freshman Sam Reed (Carmel, Ind.-Brebeuf Jesuit Prep) was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going four innings, surrendering just one run on one hit, walking five and striking out two.

In the batter's box, the Eagles were led by sophomore Josh Kross (Brunswick, Ohio.-Brunswick-Toledo), who went 3-for-5 on the day with a home run and three RBIs. Graduate student Matt Kirk (Milford, Ohio.-Milford-Cypress-Toledo) put together a standout performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and an RBI. Graduate student Kyle Schroedle (Redding, Calif.-University Prep-Crown College) also contributed for Eastern Michigan, putting together two hits in five trips to the plate while adding a double.

How it Happened
The Eagles lost despite scoring in six different innings in the ballgame. Eastern Michigan's biggest output came in its two-run third inning. The Eagles punctuated their two run inning with a run-scoring double from Kirk.

» Junior Jagger Jefferies (Barnesville, Ohio.-Barnesville-Bryant & Stratton C.C.) made his first start as an Eagle today and picked up a career-high two strikeouts, allowing just one run on two hits.
» Kross drove in three runs in today's contest, putting him back in the lead for RBIs this season with 23. Additionally, today's game marks Kross' seventh game of the 2023 campaign where he has tallied multiple RBIs. By knocking two singles and a homer today, the sophomore slugger now has a team-high eight-game hit-streak. Moreover, the first-year Eagle's three-hit performance today marks the third time the Brunswick, Ohio. native has tallied three hits in a game in his career.
» Reed had a career performance on the bump today for Eastern Michigan. The freshman had his longest stint on the mound of his career as he pitched four innings. The Caramel, Ind. native proved hard to hit as he gave up just one run on one sole hit.
» With a double to right-field in the top-half of the third inning, Glenn Miller (Pentwater, Mich.-Pentwater-Spring Arbor) extended his hit-streak to an EMU career-high five straight games.
» Going 2-for-5 at the plate today with a double, Schroedle now has a hit in four straight games, the longest of the graduate student's Eastern Michigan career. In addition to that, Schroedle's two-bagger today means he has knocked one extra-base-hit in two of his last three games.
» By going 2-for-4 at the dish today, Cole Wilcox (Shiocton, Wisc.-Shiocton-Lake County) joins Kross and Taylor Hopkins (Mason, Ohio.-Archbishop Moeller) as the only Eagles this season to have three-straight multi-hit games.

Historical Notes
» With today's loss, the Eagles' record now shifts to 4-5 when versing the Butler Bulldogs.
