 – Recognized for its success in and out of the pool, the Eastern Michigan University Swimming and Diving team had three student-athletes named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District team, the organization announced Tuesday, Feb. 28. Named to the prestigious academic list were seniors Lainie Bell (Atlanta, Ga.-Druid Hills-Northern Arizona) and Keira Veltigian (Oxford, Mich.-Oxford), as well as juniors Katie Shoen (Owego, N.Y.-Owego Free Academy) and Camryn Hughes (London, Ontario-Sir Frederick Banting Secondary).

Earning the distinction for the first time, Bell, Veltigian, Shoen, and Hughes became just the sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth Eagles in program history to earn Academic All-District honors, respectively. Previously, Sarah Chrzanowski was honored in 2006 and 2007, Madeleine Pilchard collected the accolade in 2006 and 2007, Briana Emig snagged the honor in 2013, Delaney Duncan was awarded the distinction in 2018, and most recently, Bethany Berger in 2021.

Bell, who is working towards a bachelors in Anthropology, holds a 3.96 GPA. The senior ranks 16th on the team in terms of performance score averages (619.40), with her best season score of 649 points coming in the 50 Free at the Dennison Invitational, Dec. 1-3. Bell finished the prelims with a time of 24.02, just a second slower than her season-best 23.05 set in the Mid-American Conference Championship last season, Feb 24, 2022.

Veltigian, a marketing major, currently holds a 3.87 GPA. As a diver for the Green and White, Veltigian placed ninth in both the 1M Diving Prelims (243.21) and in the 1M Diving Finals (259.68) of the MAC Championships, Feb. 23-25. A season ago, the senior finished the same event in fifth place with a 275.45 score in the 2022 MAC Championship, Feb. 23, 2022.

Shoen, an Actuarial Science and Economic major boasting a 3.93 GPA, finished the 50 Free prelims at the Mid-American Conference Championship, Feb. 25, in 22.99 seconds, the sixth-best time in EMU history.

Hughes, a Mechanical Engineering major with a perfect 4.0 GPA, finished sixth in the 3-meter dive, with a score of 276.50, Feb. 22, at the MAC Championship. The next day, Hughes podiumed in the 1-meter dive, earning third place with a 290.65 score.
