Eastern posted an 89 percent graduation rate among its student-athletes
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University Athletics continues its high standard of academic excellence, posting its highest Graduation Success Rate (GSR) in program history in the latest report released by the NCAA Wednesday, Dec. 6.
EMU posted an overall GSR of 89 with the mark surpasses the department's previous best set during the 2019-20 and 2021-22 seasons. Overall, it is the ninth consecutive year EMU has posted a GSR of 80 or higher. The total is a 17-point jump from numbers released in 2010-11.
"Academic success at Eastern Michigan is of the highest priority, and is a source of pride for our department," said EMU Vice President/Director of Athletics Scott Wetherbee. "Our student-athletes are committed to becoming champions in the classroom and in competition. We are thankful for the support from the faculty, academic support staff, and our coaches, who are committed to guiding them to reach their academic goals."
The Graduation Success Rate measures graduation rates for student-athletes by team. The GSR considers student-athletes who are on scholarship in their first year and who graduate from their respective universities or leave their programs, via transfer to other universities or for professional opportunities, while in good academic standing.
Men's golf, women's golf, women's basketball, women's gymnastics, women's soccer, and women's volleyball all posted perfect scores of 100. It was the 16th consecutive year gymnastics posted a perfect score. It was also the 13th-consecutive 100 for volleyball and the seventh in a row for women's golf.
Furthermore, every program posted a GSR of 81-or-better with 11 teams improving on or tying the previous year's total.
The Graduation Success Rate includes data about the most recent six-year graduating class of student-athletes receiving athletics aid and entering college as freshmen in 2016-17. The GSR is designed to show the proportion of student-athletes graduating within a six-year window, accounting for transferring student-athletes coming into the institution and student-athletes leaving the institution in good standing.
The NCAA developed the Division I Graduation Success Rate in response to college and university presidents who wanted graduation data that more accurately reflects the mobility among all college students today.
The federal graduation rate, while less inclusive than the GSR, provides the only measure of historic academic comparison between student-athletes and the general student body. Using this standard, EMU student-athletes outperformed their peers in the student body by 24 percent.
Graduation Success Rates for Eastern Michigan's women's programs continue to excel. All nine programs (lacrosse is not included as they began in 2022-23) posted GSRs of 87 percent-or-better, with seven boasting scores above 90 percent.
On the men's side, golf topped the chart at 100 percent with men's basketball also posting its best GSR figure at 92, a 52-point improvement from its 2006-07 number.
Among Mid-American Conference schools, Eastern Michigan was tied for first in six sport categories -- men's golf, women's golf, women's basketball, gymnastics, soccer, and volleyball.
