MOBILE, Ala. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University football team arrived in Mobile, Ala., today, Dec. 19, in anticipation of the upcoming 68 Ventures Bowl. The Eagles will face the University of South Alabama Jaguars, Saturday, Dec. 23, inside Hancock Whitney Stadium, the game will be televised on ESPN with kickoff slated for 6 p.m. CT.
Following its mid-morning departure from Ypsilanti's Willow Run Airport, the team touched down in Mobile around 12:30 p.m. CT and was greeted by members of the bowl committee. Following a short commute from the airport, the Eagles arrived at the team hotel and were welcomed by the smooth southern sounds of Excelsior Band 1883, a six-piece brass band, with green and white balloons and an illuminated ETOUGH sign in the entry.
Following some downtime to unpack and unwind, EMU headed to the Fort Whiting Armory/Reception Hall where Associate Athletic Director for Media Relations Greg Steiner was presented a key to the city of Mobile from Mayor Sandy Stimpson on behalf of the 68 Ventures Bowl.
Head Coach Chris Creighton and his counterpart, University of South Alabama Head Coach Kane Wommack, met with local dignitaries and members of the media to open the evening before dinner was served for all in attendance.
"We are honored to be back in Mobile again," Creighton said. "We had a great time during the week right until pregame, which we are hoping to change this time around."
With clean plates and full stomachs, the teams got their first taste of competition with one another as five games were contested, pitting the Eagles and Jaguars against one another. Following rounds of interactive games, including the likes of Jeopardy! and Family Feud, Eastern was victorious, taking a 3-2 victory in a night that saw both teams enthusiastically cheering one another to the end.
The Eagles will have a full slate of activities tomorrow, Dec. 20. The day kicks off bright and early as the Early Signing Period opens at 7 a.m. ET. EMUEagles.com and the team's social media handles will update throughout the day as the newest Eagles sign their National Letters of Intent to join the program for the 2024 season.
On Wednesday, the Eagles will serve the greater Mobile community as a large portion of the team is slated to assist the Prodisee Pantry in packaging non-perishable goods for those in need. Another flock of Eagles will tour the Africatown Heritage House, a community building that houses "Clotilda: The Exhibition," which tells the tale of survivors and descendants of slaves transported on the Clotilda, the United States' last known slave ship, many of whom established Africatown. The remainder of the team will make a stop at FlightWorks Alabama, an interactive aerospace exhibition and education center before the entire group will hit the practice field in the afternoon.
