YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University swim and dive team hosted its first meet inside Jones Natatorium since the 2020-21 Mid-American Conference (MAC) Swimming and Diving Championships, resulting in a 179-120 loss at the hands of the Miami University RedHawks in the 2023-24 season's home-opener, Oct. 28.

The Eagles started the meet on a high note with strong showings in the 200 yard medley relay and the 1,000 yard freestyle. Eastern's A and B relay teams placed second and third in the event, respectively, with the A team consisting of Siporah Sang (London, Ontario/Sir Frederick Banting Secondary School), Nina LaRosa (Bay Village, Ohio/Bay), Olivia Clarino (Toronto, Ontario/Lawrence Park Collegiate Institute), and Lucy Noble (Flagler Beach, Fla./Flagler Palm Coast) swam the distance in 1:44.38. The B squad, made up of Kiersten Russell (Clinton, Mich./Saline), Abby Szadorski (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East), Tristen Mina (Santa Clara, Calif./The King's Academy), and Katie Shoen (Owego, N.Y./Owego Free Academy) finished the race in 1:45.80.

Ali Kudo (Guelph, Ontario/John F. Ross Collegiate Vocational Institute) paced Eastern in the 1,000 yard freestyle, finishing second in 10:34.63, EMU's top time in the event this season. EMU continued with strong showings in the 100 yard backstroke as Sang placed second in 56.34, followed by Russell, who finished fourth in 57.55. Sang's 56.34 marks the Eagles fastest 100 yard backstroke performance this season.

The Eagles first first-place finish of the day came from LaRosa in the 100 breaststroke, swimming the distance in 1:05.30, capturing nine points for the Green and White.

Katarina Pastar (Vienna, Austria/Gymnasium am Augarten) took second place in the 200 butterfly as she finished in 2:07.01.

In the 200 breaststroke, Eastern dominated, claiming the one, three and four spots with Szadorski's 2:22.01 leading the way, followed by Mina's 2:24.80 in third and LaRosa's 2:27.45 in fourth.

On the boards, Eastern Michigan displayed its diving prowess against the RedHawks, as the Eagles took the one, two and three spots in the one-meter with Keira Veltigian's (Oxford, Mich./Oxford) 282.75 in first, Camryn Hughes' (London, Ontario/Sir Frederick Banting Secondary School) 281.33 in second and Savannah Fisk's (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) 279.30 in third. The diving domination continued in the three-meter with Veltigian taking second with a 285.15, Rebekah Knapp (Mesa, Ariz./Skyline) placing third, scoring 272.18 points and Hughes in fourth with 268.73.

Additionally, the Eagles' one-meter trio of Veltigian, Hughes, and Fisk all qualified for NCAA Zone Diving Championships with their performances. Veltigian also paved her way to NCAA zones in the three meter, securing her spot just two meets into the season.
