Eagles Soar in Triumph After 3-1 Win Over Miami RedHawks

Two Eagles produced double-double efforts in the victory
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team was triumphant in a four-set match against the RedHawks of Miami University, Friday, Oct. 27, inside the George Gervin GameAbove Center. The Mid-American Conference victory marked the first of the season and the third overall win under first-year head coach Kevin Foeman.
The Eagles were led by a double-double from Ava Siefke (Cincinnati, Ohio/Saint Ursula Academy), who registered a career-high 18 kills and 16 digs on the day with help form a double-double from Elle McLoughlin (Zanesville, Ohio/Tri Valley) who helped on 41 kills and 11 digs. Callie Minshew (Brandon, Miss./Brandon/Mississippi State) also added 15 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Hannah Howard (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Ursula Academy) chipped in for with 24 digs to go with six blocks from Angel Baylark (Burlington, Iowa/Burlington/UT Martin).
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Eagles grabbed control on the first point and held the lead the rest of the way to win the first set 25-20. EMU led by as many as seven points at 18-11 before finishing off the set. The Eagles received a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked four Miami attacks in the set.
SET 2 | The Green and White carried momentum from a set-one win by securing another 25-20 victory in set number two. The Eagles grabbed the set propelled by a solid performance on the attacking side. Eastern put together a .308 attack percentage with 10 kills and rallied from down six at 18-12 to claim the win. The EMU offense also got a boost from five aces in the stanza.
SET 3 | Eastern Michigan couldn't finish off the sweep, losing the third set to make their lead two sets to one in the match. The Eagles lost the first point and never took the lead before losing the set 25-19.
SET 4 | EMU then responded to close out the match with a 25-18 set-four victory. The Eagles led from the opening point on in the set to earn the victory. Eastern Michigan opened up as much as an eight point lead at 22-14 before finishing off the stanza, totaling 17 kills in the process.

» Two Eagles contributed double-double performances in Siefke (18 kills, 16 digs) and McLoughlin (41 assists, 11 digs) marking the fifth time EMU has recorded two Eagles with double-doubles in the same match this season. The last time two Eagles registered double-doubles in the same match was in the 3-2 loss to Central Michigan University, Sept. 26, which also featured McLoughlin and Siefke.
» Siefke's double-double performance against the RedHawks marked just the fourth of the rookie's career while McLoughlin's was her sixth.
» Siefke led the Eagles in kills with a career-high 18, topping her previous 16 set against Central Michigan University, Sept. 26. The team-leading 18 kills mark just the fifth time in which the rookie has led the team. The Cincinnati native currently ranks second on the team with 150 kills.
» Additionally, Siefke's 18-for-35 hitting performance was good for a career-high .486 attacking percentage. It marked the second time the freshman has hit above .400 as she hit the mark against Northern Illinois University on a 7-for-15 hitting performance, Oct. 12.
» Eastern Michigan won the first two sets against the RedHawks with a score of 25-20 in both. It was just the fifth time this season in which the Eagles have come out victorious in the first set, the third time this season winning the first two, and the fourth recording consecutive set wins in any set number. In 2022, the Eagles won the first set nine times and the first two sets in a row just four times.
» Hannah Howard (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Ursula Academy) led the team in digs with 24, just one shy of her career-high 25 set at the University of Toledo, Sept. 21. Her 24 digs marked the freshman's 15th double-digit dig performance of the season. Howard's 3.89 digs per set ranks her in the top-10 in the conference. She is one of only two underclassmen to be listed in the top-10 rankings for digs/set joining the University of Akron's Vanessa Del Real.
» Baylark had another impressive blocking performance for the Green and White, notching six total blocks. It was just the third time this season in which the senior has recorded at least six total blocks in single match. Baylark accomplished this feat four times while at UT Martin.
» Minshew recorded four serving aces in the match against Miami. The total is the most the graduate student has recorded in a contest this season topping her three serving aces against Western Illinois University, Sept. 2, and at Toledo, Sept. 21. It also marked the seventh time that she has led the Eagles in service aces in 2023.
» Minshew sits just three service aces away from hitting her careermilestone mark of 100 serving aces. The graduate student has registered a single service ace in 16-of-25 matches played this season and leads the team with 27 total aces.
» Eastern Michigan as a team had three players procure over 10 kills in the win against Miami. It is the third time this season in which the Eagles have had three or more players register double-digit kills with tonight's outcome ending in a win for the first time this season.
» As a team, Eastern Michigan recorded nine total blocks in the victory over Miami. It was the seventh time this season in which the Eagles have tallied at least nine total blocks. Additionally, the nine stops topped Miami's six marking the team's eighth match out-blocking its opponent and the second consecutive after doing so against Bowling Green State Univesity the night before.
» Eastern Michigan defeated Miami in service aces as the Green and White recorded eight to the opposing five. It marked the sixth time (3-3) EMU has aced its opponent this season after doing so last against Morehead State University, Sept. 16. Last season, the Green and White aced its opponent in nine meetings, holding a 5-4 record in such games.

» With the result of tonight's matchup, the Miami RedHawks hold a 43-19 overall record over the Eagles, dating back to 1979. The last time the two birds flew against each other was last season when the Green and White dismantled the RedHawks in three straight sets during both matches of the road series, Oct. 14-15, 2022. The two sweeps marked just the second and third contest the Eagles had won that ended in a three-set decision during the 2022 season. Miami was the only conference member to be included in that mark.
