Skanes Earns MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week Honors

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - Eastern Michigan University women's basketball junior forward Ce'Nara Skanes (Oklahoma City, Okla.-Putnam City West) has been named the Mid-American Conference's Female Scholar Athlete of the Week, the league office announced today, Jan. 4. The recognition is the first for the Oklahoma native.
Skanes was exceptional in EMU's 76-61 home thriller against Hillsdale College, Dec. 28. TheEMU all-time double-doubles leader paced the Eastern scoring effort with 23 points, while adding in seven rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Additionally, Skanes topped her previous career high two made triples set in two different contests with her four buckets from beyond the arc against the Chargers. The Oklahoma native has recorded a made three-pointer in consecutive games, earning one against Wright State University, Dec. 21. Prior to this season, the junior had only made one trey in her career. This season, Skanes is 11-for-37 in three pointers (29.7%).
EMU finished the non-conference slate with an 8-3 record. The eight overall wins are the most for the program since the 2020-21 campaign when the Green and White grabbed 10 victories in the season. Additionally, Eastern Michigan went 3-1 in its non-league home games one season ago and has topped that record with a 5-2 start at home to begin the 2022-23 campaign. Prior to the loss against the University of North Dakota, Dec. 4, and the University of Southern Indiana, Dec. 10, this season marks the fifth in the last 10 years that EMU was 4-0 at home to begin a season.
Eastern is set to open MAC play with a home contest against the Miami University RedHawks, tonight, Jan. 4 inside the George Gervin GameAbove Center. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+. Ryan Wooley (play-by-play), and Lexi Ayala (analyst) will have the call. It will also be broadcast live on WEMU (89.1FM) and the Varsity Network app with Tom Helmer, the Voice of Eastern Michigan Athletics, and Alex Jewell on the call.
