Gremm registers third double-double in rookie season

CINCINNATI, OH (emueagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team fell to the Purdue University Fort Wayne Mastodons in three sets (19-25, 21-25, 25-27) Friday, Sept. 2, at the Cintas Center on the campus of Xavier University.

The Eagles were led by a double-double from standout freshman Sabrina Gremm (North Royalton, Ohio - Gilmour Academy), who registered 15 kills and 16 digs on the day. Senior Samantha Basham (Granville, Ohio - Newark Catholic) also added eight kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, rookie Emma McMahon (Monroeville, Ind. - Bellmont) chipped in with 16 digs to go with five blocks from senior Raeven Chase (Toronto, Ontario - Michael Power St. Joseph Catholic).

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Eagles found themselves in an early hole, losing a tough first set, 25-19. The team trailed by as many as six points as Purdue Fort Wayne grabbed the advantage for good at 15-14 in a set that was tied up four times before the Mastodons took over in the second half of the stanza.

SET 2 | A 25-21 second-set loss put Eastern Michigan in a 2-0 hole. The Mastodons took hold of the lead early in the set with the Eagles trailing by as many as six points in a set that was tied up just once before the Mastodons took over the lead at 3-2.

SET 3 | The Green and White were not able to stay alive in the third set and was swept by Purdue Fort Wayne. The Eagles fell in a back-and-forth battle, losing 27-25 in a set that featured five lead changes and was tied 15 times. Neither team had a lead of more than three points along the way.

Match Notes
» Gremm had a team-high one ace in the loss, just one short of her career high set at Michigan State University, Aug. 27. She also registered her third double-double to lead the Eagles with the match-high 15 kills and 16 digs. The Ohio native tied her previously set career high in kills (15) versus Fairfield University, Aug. 26.
» Eastern Michigan attackers were helped by a team-high 16 assists from sophomore Kendall Burk (Bloomington, Ill. - University High School). The returner was short three assists in reaching her career and season-high 19, which came the weekend prior at Michigan State, Aug. 27.

Historical Notes
» The 3-0 non-conference loss moved Eastern Michigan to 0-4 on the season. This match marks the first time the Eagles lost in three sets in the 2022 campaign. The last time the Green and White lost in three sets was against Central Michigan University, Nov. 17, 2021.
