YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University Department of Athletics raised a record-breaking $3.9 million in cash received during the past fiscal year, while also securing more than $5 million in commitments. The philanthropic support to Eastern Athletics totals more than $20 million in cash and pledges since FY18 as a part of the University's "Give Rise" campaign, which was publicly launched in May 2021.
"Today is a day to say thank you!," said EMU Vice President/Director of Athletics Scott Wetherbee. "We are so very grateful and appreciative for the continued support of our 450+ student-athletes across 19 sports. Our donors' generosity affords us the opportunity to provide an elite student-athlete experience as our young men and women pursue excellence in competition, the classroom, and the community."
Eastern Michigan's fiscal year runs from July 1 through June 30.
Several key elements helped to contribute to this record-breaking year. GameAbove committed $2.7 million to rename the campus arena in honor of former student-athlete and NBA Legend George Gervin. Additionally, in the spirit of #GIVINGTRUEDAY, EMU Regent Emeritus Phil Incarnati made a $1 million challenge gift to galvanize interest and financial support.
"The generosity of GameAbove and the opportunity to showcase Mr. Gervin is transformational for our student-athletes and coaches," added Wetherbee. "I am looking forward to showing off all the enhancements and improvements we have made in the past six months, the George Gervin GameAbove Center is one of the best venues in the region. I also want to personally thank Regent Emeritus Incarnati for challenging our department and for offering a matching gift program. This challenge allowed us to work with so many passionate alumni and donors to put us over the $5 million mark this year."
"I am filled with gratitude for GameAbove, our Champions Advisory Board, Regent Emeritus Phil Incaranti and all our donors at every level," mentioned EMU Senior Associate AD for Development Dan McLean."Their generosity makes a tangible difference for our young people and will continue enhancing the experience of our student-athletes representing the Block E."
