The award is given annually to the most outstanding defensive player in college football
SOUTHAMPTON, Pa. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University senior defensive lineman Jose Ramirez (Lake Alfred, Fla.-Auburndale-Arizona-Riverside City) has been named to the 2022 Bednarik Award Watch List, the Maxwell Football Club announced Monday, Aug. 1. Since 1994, the Bednarik Award has been presented to the college defensive player of the year in honor of Chuck "Concrete Charlie" Bednarik, an all-american at the University of Pennsylvania.
Ramirez is the first EMU player to receive the preseason accolade since 2019, when Kevin McGill was tabbed with the honor. Overall, he is one of five Mid-American Conference receivers named to the 90-man list.
Selected Preseason First Team All-MAC by both Athlon Sports and Phil Steele in 2022, Ramirez dominated on the defensive line last season. He ranked 10th in the MAC with 6.5 sacks, a career-best mark for the Lake Alfred, Fla. native. Ramirez was third on the team with 63 tackles (32 solo, 31 assisted) in 2021, and led the team with 12.0 tackles for loss. Ramirez also forced a team-leading three fumbles this season.
As a unit, EMU forced 16 turnovers in 2021, and scored points off of 14 (10 touchdowns, 4 field goals) of those opportunities. EMU scored 82 points off those turnovers, three as a direct result of the play, and 11 times in its subsequent offensive possession.
The Maxwell Football Club has once again partnered with Pro Football Focus (PFF), XOS and Phil Steele Publications as selection committee partners. PFF provides detailed metrics and performance-based assessments to selection committee staff, and several senior PFF analysts are members of our selection committee. Phil Steele's College Football Preview is generally recognized as the most complete preseason magazine. XOS provides the Maxwell Club selection committee with access to game footage from all FBS colleges.
Semifinalists for the Chuck Bednarik Award will be announced Nov. 1, while the three finalists for the Bednarik Award will be unveiled Nov. 22. The winners of the 28th Bednarik Award will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show held Dec. 8. The formal presentations of the award will be made at the 86th Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala live from Atlantic City, N.J. on March 10, 2023.
