Volleyball Keeps USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award Streak Alive

LEXINGTON, Ky. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University volleyball program received its 18th consecutive recognition by the United States Marine Corps (USMC) and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) who announced the Eagles as recipients of the 2022 USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award today, July 18.
In a list of over 1,200 colleges and high schools, EMU stands out for its 22nd USMC/AVCA Team award as well as its impressive 18-year win streak dating back to 2005.
"Winning the AVCA Team Academic Award is a big deal for the Eastern Michigan Volleyball program!" head coach Darcy Dorton exclaimed. "We get to celebrate this award with our alumni and acknowledge the high bar that they have set for our program over the last 18 years."
As a partner of the USMC, the AVCA celebrates its 30th year anniversary in honoring academic excellence within volleyball community's nationwide. Each year, volleyball teams throughout the collegiate and high school levels (men/women, boys/girls, indoor/beach) with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale or 4.1 on a 5.0 scale are honored with the USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award.
In the 2021-22 academic school year, the volleyball program finished with a spectacular 3.61 team GPA. "The AVCA Team Academic Award has become a part of our tradition and every academic year our team takes pride in continuing the streak. " Dorton continued. "We are proud of this year's team for upholding the standard of academic excellence that our alumni began 18 years ago."
Last year, in a year where a record breaking 245 NCAA Division I Women programs received the award, the Eagles knotted their 21st accolade which was tied for fourth in number of AVCA Team Academic award honors. Additionally, Eastern was recognized as one of only eight teams to hold a streak of 15 years or more with its 17th consecutive honor, which was good for the four spot for longest streak in the AVCA record book.
This year, DePaul University as well as Yale University earned their 15th honor in a row, making Eastern Michigan one of ten schools in the 15+ year streak club. The Eagles remain in fourth for the most amount of awards as well as for the longest streak.
