It is the Leamington, Ontario native's first such honor

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University baseball student-athlete Daniel Warkentin (Leamington, Ontario-Leamington District (Parkland)) was named as an Academic All-District selection, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday, May 12.

More specifically, Warkentin has earned a spot on the NCAA Division I First Team, for District 5, which includes all eligible institutions in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio.

The senior earned the honor for the first time in his career, and became the second EMU player honored in as many years after Mike Monahan got the nod a season ago. It marks the first time that Eastern Michigan has had players honored in consecutive years since 2018 and 2019, respectively. Warkentin is the 13th player in program history to earn the award. Three student-athletes have recorded the accomplishment multiple times.

One of the most explosive players in college baseball in 2022, Warketin has put together a career-best season for the Green and White during his senior campaign. The Mid-American Conference leader with a career-high 14 home runs this season, Warkentin is currently tied for ninth all-time in EMU's single-season history for that category. The Leamington, Ontario native also paces the team in runs (career-high 43). He is second on the team in batting average (career-high .315) and slugging percentage (career-high .651), and ranks inside the team's top-five in walks (career-high 18), hits (career-high 46), RBIs (career-high 37), steals (career-high 3), doubles (career-high 7), at-bats (career-high 46), and total bases (career-high 95). He became the first Eagle since 2017 to hit three home runs in a game when he did so against Bowling Green, May 1, and is one of just three players on this year's roster to have four hits in a single game, which he did at Miami, April 10. Nearly perfect defensively, Warkentin has also fielded at a career-best .979 clip this season as the team's primary second baseman.

The 2021-22 Academic All-District® Baseball Team, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The CoSIDA Academic All-America® program separately recognizes baseball honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.

First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in late July.
