Distance runners and throwers dominate first day of events
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University track & field team wrapped up a solid first day at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships tonight, May 12, at the Kanley Track & Field Complex. The men currently sit in second with 36 points behind Kent State's 42, while the women tallied 19 points to tie with Toledo for second, trailing the Golden Flashes' 22.
How It Happened
The men's distance runners highlighted day one after an incredible display in the 10,000m race. Junior harrier Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) led the charge in his first 10K since 2019, winning the event in 30:14.23, while sophomores Toby Gualter (Tawa, Zealand-Tawa College) finished third (30:22.40) and Chris Devaney (New Plymouth, New Zealand-New Plymouth) took fourth (30:27.80). For Devaney, this was his first collegiate outing in the event. Following the men's race, junior Sofia Ivanko (Buenos Aires, Argentina-St. Matthew's College) registered a career-best time of 35:08.92 for fifth, the fourth-fastest time in program history.
Senior Joe Duff (Crosswell, Mich.-Crosswell-Lexington (Concordia University)) was EMU's first champion of the day, capturing his first MAC title. In the javelin competition, Duff recorded a career-high toss of 68.00m, the second-furthest throw in school history. Additionally, the senior became the first thrower to win the event since former Eagle Derek Ziegenfuss earned gold in 2017 with a 68.89-meter mark.
Junior Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) finished third in the hammer throw with a mark of 63.83m, an improvement from his sixth place, 60.54-meter effort from last year's league meet.
The women's 200m dash group of junior Mair Edwards (Basingstoke, England-The Costello School) (2nd - 24.15Q), sophomore Kilani Harvey (Orlando, Fla.-Jones (Morehead State)) (4th - 24.38Q), freshman Saraiah Walkes (Manatee County, Fla.-The-Out-of-Door-Academy) (5th - 24.45Q), and senior Keypathwa Gibson (Toledo, Ohio-Roy C. Start) (8th - 24.64q) all qualified for the finals.
