YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University tennis team bested Western Michigan University on Senior Day today, April 22, 4-3. The Eagles move to 3-6 in Mid-American Conference play, and are 15-15 overall.
"Just like every MAC match, this was an absolute battle and it really came down to just a few points each way to decide the winner," said Head Coach Jayson Wiseman. "Our seniors and graduates did an amazing job leading the wa, with energy and emotion, and they secured the doubles point for us. It was great for Lu and Sabina to bounce back with straight-set wins after heartbreaking 3-set losses the last time we played Western. Hopefully we can carry some of that momentum through to Sunday and finish the season strong against Ball State."
How It Happened
Eastern started off the day with energy in doubles play. Redshirt seniors Luisa Pelayo (Porto, Portugal-Colegio CEBES (Wright State)) and Grace Whitney (Imlay City, Mich.-Imlay City (Wright State)) earned the first win of the day, 6-3, in the two spot. Classmate Vasavi Ganesan (Chennai, India-Alagappa Matriculation School (Eastern Florida State)) and redshirt sophomore Isabelle Popma (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education) followed close behind, winning 6-2 at No. 3, and clinched the doubles point for the Eagles.
In singles, redshirt junior Emma-Lou Pommiers (Aire-sur-l'Adour, France-Dominique Saint Pau) struck first for EMU, topping her Bronco opponent 6-2, 6-1, in the five spot. With the match tied at two, freshman Sabina Brichackova (Cheb, Czech Republic-Gymnazium Jana Blahoslava) put the Eagles ahead in convincing fashion, 6-0, 6-2, in the No. 3 spot. Clinching the Senior Day win was Pelayo, winning in straight-sets, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 1.
