YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The lights shined bright on Ypsilanti tonight, April 15, as the Eastern Michigan University football team took to the gray turf inside "The Factory" at Rynearson Stadium for its annual spring football game.
Football was not the only activity available to patrons, as the EMU Department of Athletics offered a variety of attractions to add to the free-of-charge experience.
All attendees were welcomed first to the George Gervin GameAbove Center atrium, where Assistant Athletic Director for Equipment Operations, Ben Herman, and his staff, hosted their semi-annual adidas gear sale. From hats, to shirts, to game-worn jerseys, and more, hundreds of fans left equipped to show their EMU pride.
Inside the stadium, the festivities continued, as food trucks from the local area joined in on the night of community fun to offer numerous refreshment options for attendees.
Of course, the Kids Club was open for action as bounce houses, photo opportunities, and free Easter Egg filled with candy and other items were available.
Then, of course, there was the football.
Divided into two separate squads, it was the Green Team that came out on top, 10-7. The game, which featured 12-minute, running quarters (as opposed to 15-minute, standard quarters in regulation games), saw the White Team mount a comeback, but ultimately fall short.
How It Happened
It was the Green Team that came out firing as it marched down the field in quick fashion before connecting on a deep 53-yard field goal off the leg of Jesus Gomez (Puebla, Mexico-Prepa Tec Puebla). That put the Green Team ahead, 3-0. Later in the first half, it was junior Samson Evans (Crystal Lake, Ill.-Prairie Ridge (Iowa)) that found the pay dirt as he punched it in from just outside the goal line. That score helped propel the Green Team to a 10-0 halftime lead.
Following the break, both defenses showed great adjustment. The White Team got on the board via a Tanner Knue (Mason, Ohio-Mason) touchdown strike in the third quarter. The junior notched the only score of the second half. Despite marching down the field with just seconds on the clock in the fourth quarter, the White Team was unable to connect on a game-tying field goal and the Green Team celebrated victory.
Game Notes
» The Green Team dominated the first half of play as it took a 10-0 lead into the halftime intermission. Overall, the squad's offense ran 17 plays for 116, an average of 6.8 yards per play.
» Defensively, the Green Team was stout as well in the first half, holding the White Team to eight plays for 28 yards.
» Despite the halftime differentials, the game finished very close in numerous statistical categories, including first downs (Green – 8, White – 7), yards per rush (Green – 3.9, White – 3.1), Pass completions (five each on 10 and 11 attempts, respectively), and yards (White – 176, Green – 129).
