Track & Field Produces Strong Performances in Friday Meets
2/4/2022 8:10:00 PM | Men's Track & Field, Women's Track & Field
Kadian Clarke produced school-record weight throw of 21.13m
ALLENDALE, Mich. & SOUTH BEND, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University track & field program gained experience with meets at Grand Valley State University and the University of Notre Dame today, Feb. 4.
"Coming off a rest week last week I thought we had some solid performances across the board," said Associate Head Coach Christ Best. "This meet helped set us up to have some breakthroughs next week when we return to GVSU. The throwers had a very good meet with Kadian Clarke having a record-setting performance in the weight throw."
"We've had a few hard weeks of training and it's good to see things start to fall in place for MACs," Associate Head Coach Sterling Roberts added. "We're getting PRs and season's bests for a lot of athletes in every event group, and even more impressively, everyone's been performing consistently."
How It Happened
At the GVSU Snowdown Showdown, senior Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception) recorded a school-record weight throw of 21.13m for the win, improving upon her 20.62m mark set earlier this year at the Michigan Invitational, Jan. 22. The veteran thrower also captured the shot put title with a personal-best toss of 15.39m, the second-best throw in program history behind former Eagle Brittany Crew's 15.67m effort set in 2013.
Junior Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) and Chukwusom Enekwechi (Valley Stream, N.Y.-Jamaica Gateway to the Sciences (Monroe College)) also earned wins in the field with victories in the weight throw (21.50m) and shot put (17.96m), respectively.
On the track, junior Mair Edwards (Basingstoke, England-The Costello School) dominated the 200m with a personal-best time of 24.49. Additionally, the sprinter crossed the finish line in 55.85 in the 400 for first. Freshman Kaleb Simpson (Bexley, Ohio-St. Charles Preparatory) took first in the 60, clocking in at 6.84. Classmate Almighty Williamson (Baltimore, Md.-Digital Harbor (Barton C.C.)) captured the 60H with a 7.98 clip, his fourth-straight victory in the event this season.
At the Meyo Invitational, Eastern's only event of the day was the women's 5000m race. Junior Sofia Ivanko (Buenos Aires, Argentina-St. Matthew's College) paced the team with a personal-best time of 17:23.59. Freshman teammate Marta Moreno (Wassenaar, Netherlands-American School of The Hague) crossed the finish line in 17:55.26, while junior Kaitlyn St. Bernard (Newport, Mich.-Jefferson) finished in 17:59.97.
