The Eagles earn their first MAC weekly honor of the spring season

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) —  The Eastern Michigan University tennis team saw redshirt senior Luisa Pelayo (Porto, Portugal-Colegio CEBES (Wright State)) earn Mid-American Conference Singles Player of the Week, the league office announced today, Feb. 23. The honor is the first of the redshirt senior's career.

On the road, Pelayo put on a show in the No. 1 singles spot for Eastern Michigan, Feb. 18, starting the day with a 6-2, 6-0, win against Northwood. The redshirt senior followed that performance by taking on a two-time All-Big Ten conference selection in Mary Lewis of Michigan State, at the No. 1 spot, and beating her 7-5, 6-4. That effort is the first point over a "Power Five" opponent in the Jayson Wiseman era (2017-pres.). The Portugal native ended 2-0 in the doubleheader as the Eagles finished the day 1-1.

The Eagles are back in action Friday, Feb. 25, at Butler and Bellarmine, and Saturday, Feb. 26, at Mercer. To stay up to date with Eastern Michigan tennis, go to EMUEagles.com or follow us on Twitter (@EMUEaglesTennis) and Instagram (@EMU_Tennis).
