Powell Honored by Manning Award as a "Star of the Week"

NEW ORLEANS, La. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University football quarterback Taylor Powell (Fayetteville, Ark.-Fayetteville-Missouri-Troy) is one of eight quarterbacks named a "Manning Award Star of the Week" for his performance in EMU's victory over Kent State University, Nov. 16. The award is Powell's first career.
The quarterback tossed for a career-high 315 yards on 30-of-39 passing and three touchdowns in the victory over the Golden Flashes. Powell was incredibly efficient through the air in the contest, completing a career-best 76.9-percent of his passes (30-of-39). That percentage is the best by any EMU quarterback since Ben Bryant hit at the same clip against Bowling Green State University, Oct. 23, 2022. Furthermore, Powell's 76.9-percent completion percentage is tied for the ninth-best single-game mark in the program's modern statistical era (1999-Pres.). The program record in that span is Mike Glass III's 90.9-percent effort (20-of-22), against Coastal Carolina, Aug. 31, 2019.
Not only was Powell accurate, but the Fayetteville, Ark. native also threw for a career-best 315 yards through the air in the win. His previous best through the air was 293, against Western Michigan, Oct. 8. His three passing touchdowns also tie a career-best mark for Powell. He has hit that total in three games this season.
The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in 2004 to honor the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates' bowl performances in its balloting. Since the Manning Award started recognizing Stars of the Week in 2011, 485 different quarterbacks from 131 schools have been recognized. Fifty-one quarterbacks from 50 schools have been honored so far in the 2022 season.
This week's eight Manning Award Stars of the Week are:
Todd Centeio, James Madison (21-of-27, 274 yards, 4 TD, 0 INT, QBR: 81.9)
Centeio directs the Dukes to an impressive second-half comeback, leading them to 28 unanswered points as they upend Georgia State, 42-40, in Sun Belt action.
Chase Cunningham, Middle Tennessee (40-of-54, 448 yards, 5 TD, 1 INT, QBR: 77.1)
Cunningham, who missed the last game with an injury, returns to tally career-bests in completions and passing yards with the bulk of his stats coming in the first half of a 49-21 blowout of FAU in a C-USA road game to lift the Blue Raiders to bowl eligibility.
Max Duggan, TCU (24-of-35, 327 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, QBR: 89.0)
Duggan, who adds 50 rushing yards and another TD, completes 7-of-9 passes and runs for a pair of first downs in the final 6:38 as he leads the Horned Frogs to a touchdown and a game-winning field goal with no time remaining in a thrilling 29-28 Big 12 road win over Baylor.
Matt McDonald, Bowling Green (20-of-36, 395 yards, 4 TDs, 1 INT, QBR: 74.8)
McDonald, who tallies a career-high for passing yards, connects on a 42-yard touchdown pass with nine seconds remaining to lift the Falcons to a thrilling 42-35 MAC win over Toledo as they become bowl eligible for the first time since 2015.
Taylor Powell, Eastern Michigan (30-of-39, 315 yards, 3 TD, 0 INT, QBR: 81.2)
Powell, who records career-bests for passing yards and completion percentage, helps the Eagles erase an early 10-point deficit as he connects on a pair of second-half touchdowns in a 31-24 MAC road win over Kent State.
Michael Pratt, Tulane (9-of-14, 141 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INT, QBR: 85.4)
Pratt, who matches his career-best for touchdown passes, also runs for 70 yards and a career-best three TDs as he leads the Green Wave to a resounding 59-24 AAC victory over SMU.
Spencer Rattler, South Carolina (30-of-37, 438 yards, 6 TD, 0 INT, QBR: 96.9)
Rattler, who also had a 15-yard reception, tallies career-bests for passing yards and touchdowns (setting the school record for single-game TD passes) as he leads the Gamecocks to their most points against an SEC opponent since 1995 with a dominating 63-38 victory over No. 5 Tennessee.
Caleb Williams, USC (32-of-43, 470 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT, QBR: 87.3)
Williams, who adds a rushing touchdown, registers his career-best for passing yards as the Trojans clinch a slot in the Pac-12 Championship game with a thrilling 49-45 road win over archrival UCLA.
While the Manning Award selected 30 quarterbacks for its preseason Watch List and then made 12 midseason additions in October, all quarterbacks remain eligible for the honor. Ten finalists will be selected and the winner is scheduled to be announced following the College Football Playoff National Championship.
In its first 18 years, the Manning Award has recognized the top names in college football. It has honored quarterbacks from 13 different schools and from four different conferences. The Southeastern Conference (Bryce Young, Joe Burrow, Mac Jones, Johnny Manziel, Cam Newton, JaMarcus Russell and Tim Tebow) leads the way with seven Manning Award honorees, while the Big 12 Conference (Kyler Murray, Baker Mayfield, Vince Young, Colt McCoy and Robert Griffin III) has had five winners. The Atlantic Coast Conference (Deshaun Watson twice, Matt Ryan and Jameis Winston) has had four Manning Award winners. Alabama (Bryce Young and Jones) joins LSU (Burrow and Russell), Oklahoma (Murray and Mayfield) and Texas (McCoy and Vince Young) as the only schools with two different winners.
All the Manning Award winners follow in the footsteps of the Mannings themselves. In college, Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning combined for over 25,000 passing yards and 201 touchdowns while playing in 10 bowl games and earning four bowl MVP awards. Archie was the No. 2 pick in the NFL Draft, while both Peyton and Eli were selected No. 1 overall.
Eastern Michigan is will close its 2022 regular season with a home game against in-state rival, Central Michigan University Friday, Nov. 25, at noon. The game will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network, as well as on WEMU (89.1 FM) and the Varsity Network app.
