EMU Volleyball Pushes Fourth Set on Northern Illinois, Falls 3-1

Callie Minshew records first double-double with the Eagles
YPSILANTI, Mich. (emueagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team fell to the Northern Illinois University Huskies in a match decided by four sets inside the George Gervin GameAbove Center, Friday, Nov. 11.
The loss dropped Eastern Michigan's record to 5-23 overall and 4-12 in MAC action.
The Eagles were led by a double-double from graduate student Callie Minshew (Brandon, Mississippi-Brandon High-Mississippi State) who registered 15 kills and 12 digs on the day. Senior Krista Blakely (Detroit, Mich.- University High School Academy) also added 13 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, junior Bella Hommes (Grand Raids, Mich.- Forest Hills Northern) chipped in with 18 digs to go with seven blocks from senior Raeven Chase (Toronto, Ont.-Michael Power St. Joseph Catholic).
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Eagles dropped a close first set, losing 26-24 in a game that was tied seven times and had five lead changes.
SET 2 | Eastern Michigan then lost the second set 26-24 to fall behind in the match two sets to none. Despite a strong serving performance, the Eagles fell in the set. Eastern Michigan notched five aces in the set loss.
SET 3 | After losing the first two sets, Eastern Michigan rallied to grab the third set and make it a 2-1 match. The Eagles the set the third set 25-22. EMU took the lead for good at 14-13 in a set that had just one lead change before the Eagles took over in the second half of the stanza. The Eagles racked up 17 kills over the course of the set. Eastern Michigan's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four Northern Illinois attacks in the stanza.
SET 4 | Eastern Michigan couldn't build off the set-three victory and lost in the fourth set 25-18 to drop the match. The Eagles trailed by as many as eight points as NIU grabbed the advantage for good at 4-3 and Eastern Michigan wasn't able to recover in a set that was tied up three times before the Huskies took over.
Match Notes
» Hommes tabbed 18 digs in the first match of the series with NIU. The double-digit dig mark was just the fifth time Hommes has reached that feat. The 18 digs is a season-high for the junior. Her previous season-high (15 - twice) came at Western Michigan, Nov. 4.
» Minshew recorded 15 kills on Friday night. It is the fifth time as an Eagle she has recorded at least double digit kills, and the 20th time in her collegiate career. Furthermore, with her 12 digs, Minshew tallied her first double-double of the season. During her time at Mississippi State, the outside hitter totaled six (2019).
» Blakely recorded double-digit kills (13) for the seventh time this season, and 18th in her collegiate career. Her 215 kills this season keeps her within the top-50 in the MAC.
» With her 10 kills, Chase recorded her ninth double-digit kill performance on the season and her 30th in her career.
Historical Notes
» The contest was the 65th all time meeting between the Eagles and the Huskies. Northern Illinois has the edge on the series 36-29.
» The matched marked the 42nd time in the Darcy Dorton era that she has coached a match that went to at least four sets. Having a record of 9-33 in these matches (.214 Win-Loss).
