IOWA CITY, Iowa (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team is set to open its 2022 season at the Iowa Triangular on Saturday, Jan. 8, against host Iowa and Lindenwood. The meet is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. CT inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
This is the first gymnastics action EMU will see after becoming Mid-American Conference Champions in 2021, and competing at NCAA regionals in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
FOLLOWING THE MEET: Fans can follow the meet through live results or watch on BIG+. Links can be found on the EMU gymnastics schedule page located on EMUEagles.com.
REIGNING, DEFENDING, MAC CHAMPS: The trophy came back to Ypsilanti as Eastern captured its fourth Mid-American Conference Championship, March 20, 2021, at Western Michigan's University Arena. The Eagles totaled 195.900 to defeat the six other conference teams competing. This was the Green and White's first conference championship since 2017, and the first for Head Coach Katie Minasola.
NEW YEAR, SAME GOAL: The Eagles look to repeat as Mid-American Conference Champions in 2022, but also have their eyes set on NCAA Regionals. Having qualified as a team for just the third time in program history last season, Head Coach Katie Minasola has set the goal for her squad that the regional meet should be a yearly occurrence.
AROUND THE COUNTRY: Eastern finished the 2021 season ranked 32nd in the NCAA, an improvement from where it finished in 2020 (45th). As a matter of fact, the team improved their national rankings on every event from 2020 to 2021. The biggest boost came from bars, ending 2021 ranked 29th after landing 46th the previous season. Vault elevated to 40th from 52nd in 2020. Beam and floor also lifted six spots, finishing 22nd and 37th, respectively.
LAST TIME AGAINST LINDENWOOD: Eastern Michigan last saw Lindenwood at the GymQuarters Invitational, Feb. 12, 2021. The Eagles bested the Lions 193.975-192.275 in the meet. Two former Eagles claimed top spots as Cortney Bezold and Jada Rondeau tied for first on bars and beam, respectively, both scoring 9.875. Then-juniors Caitlin Satler and Carly Kosanovich chipped in as well. Satler tied with Rondeau on beam, and Kosanovich claimed second on floor with a score of 9.800.
Eastern is 3-1 against Lindenwood since 2015, with the sole loss coming at the Temple Quad, March 11, 2018. The Green and White's 195.725 was not enough to top the Lions who totaled 196.400.
LAST TIME AGAINST IOWA: Eastern Michigan met up with Iowa 23 years ago at the 1998 NIT Championships, April 11. Teams at the competition included, Central Michigan, Iowa, UIC, Southeast Missouri State, Auburn, Illinois State, and Northern Illinois. Eastern was bested by Iowa in the meet, 193.325-185.250.
Former Eagle J.J. Collum finished with an all-around score of 37.775. Collum was the 1997 Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year and went on to claim the 1998 MAC beam title.
KEY RETURNERS: Eastern Michigan returns all but three faces to the gym for the 2022 season. Graduate student Cali Harden is returning for her fifth year. Seniors Caitlin Satler, Shannon Gregory, Kara Roberts, and Carly Kosanovich look to leave their final marks on the program. Satler, who was named MAC Co-Specialist of the Year last season will attempt to continue her dominance on beam. Juniors Molly Parris and Hadyn Crossen will also be back after finishing first on vault and second in all-around, respectively, at the conference meet a season ago. Additionally, now-sophomores Raisa Boris and Anna Grace McCullough will have the opportunity to make more of a splash this season, having gained valuable experience competing last season.
NEW FACES IN THE GYM: The Green and White have seven new faces in the gym this year, having brought in six freshman and one transfer. The freshmen class consists of Gianna Antonio, Cassie Bergin, Jade Blankenship, Ella Chemotti, Alana Fisher, and Emma Lewis. Antonio was the Level 10 Michigan State Floor Champion in 2021, while Blankenship trained at Bull City Gymnastics under two former EMU gymnasts in Monica Davis (Lucas), 2006-09, and Lindsey Shilling, 2007-10. Chemotti was a Level 10 Michigan State Beam Champion, and a three-time Level 10 National qualifier.
Transferring from Central Michigan, Mayleigh Vanderbeek makes the trip south to Ypsilanti with two years of eligibility. Vanderbeek participated solely on beam for the Chippewas and earned a career-high 9.850 at Bowling Green, Feb. 21, 2020.
EAGLES ON ESPN3: For the fifth consecutive season, the Eagles will have their home meets broadcast on ESPN3. This season, fans will be able to watch their Eagles compete against Central Michigan, Jan. 14, in the EMU Quad, Jan. 28, and versus Northern Illinois, March 13. Furthermore, the Mid-American Conference Championships, March 19, will also be on ESPN3, as Eastern Michigan hosts.
ON THE HORIZON: Eastern looks to compete for the first time in the George Gervin GameAbove Center Friday, Jan. 14, as it welcomes Central Michigan to Ypsilanti. The meet is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and can be streamed on ESPN3.
