Women's Basketball Drops Midweek Affair With Western Michigan, 62-57

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team dropped a tight affair with Western Michigan University, 62-57, Wednesday night inside the George Gervin GameAbove Center.
The Eagles (4-8, 1-4 MAC) had two players score in double figures, led by redshirt junior Juanita Agosto (Seattle, Wash.-Garfield), who produced her second career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Redshirt sophomore Ce'Nara Skanes (Oklahoma City, Okla.-Putnam City West (Florida International)) tacked on 13 points and two assists while redshirt senior Areanna Combs (Oklahoma City, Okla.-Putnam City West (Oklahoma State)) added eight points and one dish.
Agosto also paced the team with 10 rebounds (five offensive, five defensive), tying her season-high in a single game. Additionally, Skanes pulled down seven rebounds and recorded one block on the night. Combs and redshirt senior Danielle Rainey (Washington D.C.-Vista Ridge (Florida)) both swiped two balls.
The Eastern Michigan defense held Western Michigan shooters to only 39.6 percent from the field. The Broncos did not get many second-chance opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only four offensive rebounds and scored two second-chance points while EMU pulled down 28 defensive rebounds.
How It Happened
After playing to a 7-7 tie early in the game, Eastern Michigan went on an 8-0 run with 3:54 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Combs, to take a 15-7 lead. The Eagles then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 16-10 advantage. EMU did most of its first-quarter damage in the paint, scoring eight of its 16 points close to the basket.
The Eagles could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 34-32.
Coming out of halftime, the Green and White outscored Western Michigan 6-4 in the third to tie things up at 38-38 heading to the fourth quarter. Eastern Michigan played well near the basket, scoring four of its six points in the paint. Western Michigan broke the tie, taking control in the final quarter winning 62-57. Eastern Michigan fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 19 points but ultimately fell to the Broncos, 62-57.
