Eastern Athletics Continues Academic Excellence

Student-athletes posted a 3.248 semester GPA and 3.346 cumulative GPA
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – It was another impressive semester in the classroom for the Eastern Michigan University Department of Athletics. For the 24th consecutive semester, EMU student-athletes posted an average term Grade Point Average (GPA) above 3.0.
With more than 450 student-athletes, Eastern recorded a 3.248 fall semester GPA. EMU also added a cumulative 3.346 GPA.
"Our student-athletes continued to excel academically," said EMU Vice President/Director of Athletics Scott Wetherbee. "Our academics staff continues to provide student-athletes with the support they need despite the many challenges with a constantly evolving academic model. Additionally, the focus from our coaches on the student-athletes' well-being, their constant contact with their teams and the reinforcement of the importance of finishing strong in the classroom was a huge factor in this success."
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, student-athletes overcame the challenges of an ever-changing learning environment. Overall, 71 percent (333) still earned a 3.0 GPA-or-higher for the fall semester, and 15 of Eastern's sports had term GPAs of 3.0 or higher.
Furthermore, there were 61 EMU student-athletes with perfect 4.0 GPAs last semester, led by gymnastics which had nine.
For the semester, lacrosse led all sports with a term GPA of 3.921 on EMU's 4.0 scale. Gymnastics (3.768) was next, while soccer (3.616) was third. Women's cross country (3.613) and tennis (3.606) rounded out the top five programs for the fall semester.
Overall, a total of 349 student-athletes (74 percent) hold a cumulative GPA above 3.0, while 16 teams maintain a cumulative GPA above 3.0.
