Malachino Elevated to Associate Head Soccer Coach

Joe Malachino continues his 13th season as a full-time member of Scott Hall's staff
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University Head Soccer Coach Scott Hall has announced the promotion of Joe Malachino to associate head coach today, Sept. 8.
"This promotion has been a long time coming," Hall exclaimed. "Joe is a strong servant leader and always puts the student-athletes first. He holds a very high standard for himself and that is contagious to the rest of the staff and team. I'm very appreciative of (Vice President/Director of Athletics) Scott Wetherbee and (Senior Associate AD for External Affairs) Andy Rowdon for helping to make this happen."
The 2021 season marks the 13th season for Malachino as full-time member of Hall's staff. He was a volunteer assistant from 2005-07 before being named a full-time assistant following the 2007 season.
"I am very excited and humbled to have this opportunity and responsibility as associate head coach," Malachino said. "I would like to thank Scott Weatherbee and Andy Rowdon for having the confidence and belief in my abilities to help lead and grow our strong tradition. Most importantly, I am extremely grateful to Scott Hall for his trust and commitment he has given me to continue to build our incredible program. I am super excited to get back to working with and developing our wonderful student-athletes!"
In 2019, Malachino aided the Eagles to their third-ever MAC Tournament title game appearance, and first since 2008. In addition, the Eagles garnered their first conference tournament win since 2013. Malachino helped guide Sabrina McNeill (First Team), Lindsey Shira (Second Team), and Amanda Cripps (Second and Freshman) to All-MAC honors, and McNeill to United Soccer Coaches All-Region Accolades. Eastern finished the season with an 8-11-3 mark, and a 5-6 MAC play record.
In 2018, the squad posted its most wins (10) since the 2014 season, including a non-conference win over UConn. Following the season McNeill and Kristin Nason garnered a slew of honors. McNeill was named First Team All-MAC before reeling in all-region honors, while Nason was tabbed Second Team All-MAC. Nason was also rewarded for her work in the classroom, being selected Google Cloud Academic All-District, as well as a CoSIDA Academic All-American.
In 2017, Malachino helped Peyton Davis to Second Team All-MAC honors, while Madeline Olson garnered a spot on the All-MAC Freshmen Team. EMU finished the year with a 7-12-1 overall record, including a 4-7 mark in MAC play.
In his first year as a full-time assistant, Malachino helped the Eagles to their best finish since the 2004 season. The Eagles hit double-digit wins for the highest win total since the 2001 team won 15 games. The program saw four players earn All-MAC honors while leading the conference in goals while ranking third in goals allowed.
Along with serving as the Eagles' assistant coach, Malachino is also on staff for the U.S. Soccer Training Center in Michigan, helping identify and train the state's top soccer players for the U.S. Soccer Youth National Team program. Malachino is also a U.S. Soccer Scout in Michigan.
Malachino has 27 years of coaching experience ranging from U-6, semi-professional and the college ranks. In the past, Malachino has been the Director of Coaching for the Novi Jaguars and a member of the Region II Olympic Development Program (ODP) staff. Currently, his is the 2008 girls age group Head Coach for MI ODP.
He is a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) A licensed coach, the highest level of coaching license for US soccer, and holds a United Soccer Coaches Premier Diploma.
Malachino also played professionally for seven years with the Detroit Rockers in the National Professional Soccer League.
In 2000, Malachino was named the Professional Development League (PDL) Coach of the Year for the Michigan Bucks semi-professional team. During that season, the Bucks made the championship game before losing to Chicago, 1-0. In U.S. Open Cup action, the team also defeated the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer (MLS), 1-0, at Foxboro Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., before losing 6-5 in a penalty shootout to the Miami Fusion (MLS) in the next round.
Malachino earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from Texas Christian University in 1993. He also has a Michigan Teaching certificate and is currently working towards a master's degree in teaching from Wayne State University.
Malachino and his wife, Miriam, reside in Brighton, Mich. They have a son, Kieran, and two daughters, Kaia and Kate.
