VERONA, Wis. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University sophomore MJ Smith (Rockford, Ill.-Winnebago) is tied atop the leaderboard at the Badger Invitational after an opening round tally of three-under 69 at University Ridge Golf Course, Sept. 26. Playing just 66 miles from his hometown of Rockford, Ill., Smith fired seven birdies throughout the day to post his career low round.
Sam Houston State was one of only two teams to break par on the opening day, and leads the event after firing an eight-under 280. Illinois State was the other under-par team, and stands second at two-under (286).
Only eight shots stand between third and 11th place as Iowa State stands third after their two-over 290. Northern Illinois, South Dakota State, and host Wisconsin are tied for fourth after carding three-over 291s. Cincinnati is seventh after shooting a four-over (292) with Eastern Michigan and Toledo tied for eighth after posting a seven-over 295.
Abilene Christian is eight-over and in 10th with Augusta and High Point tied with Coastal Carolina for 11th after also posting a 10-over 298 with Xavier next at 16-over (304).
How It Happened
Senior Ty Celone (Long Sault, Ontario, Canada-St Joseph's Catholic) opened his 2021-22 campaign with a 73, while sophomore Patrick Deardorff (Clarkston, Mich.-Clarkston) made his collegiate debut with a 76. Senior Cougar Collins (Caledon, Ontario, Canada-Mayfield Secondary) added a 77 in a tie for 61st and sophomore Max Watson (Ashland, Ohio-Ashland) chipped in an 80.
The second round will begin at 9 a.m. CT. The Eagles will start on holes one, two, and three and be paired with the Rockets and the Bearcats.
