The Eagles will host 11 matches inside the Convocation Center
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University Head Volleyball Coach Darcy Dorton announced the regular season schedule for the upcoming 2021 campaign today, Aug. 6. After the shortened spring season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Eagles will return to their regular season format with four non-conference tournaments before the 18-match Mid-American Conference schedule.
"The level of competition in our non-conference schedule will challenge us," Dorton said. "The opportunity to test ourselves early against strong teams will help us prepare for the tough competition we face in the MAC."
The Green and White open the season with a three-game stretch in Charleston, S.C., Aug. 27-28, playing in the College of Charleston Invitational. EMU will start the invitational by playing the host Cougars, and follow it with a match against Indiana State. The trip to the Palmetto State concludes with a contest versus Montana.
Eastern Michigan will travel back to the Mitten for a two-match series in the Golden Grizzlies Invitational hosted by Oakland University, Sept. 4-5. The Eagles will play host to Bradley inside the Convocation Center before visiting Rochester, Mich. to take on OU.
The Eagles then hit the road to the Land of Lincoln, playing in the UIC Invitational, Sept. 10-11, hosted by the University of Illinois-Chicago. EMU kicks off the weekend by taking on Chicago State before squaring off with tournament host UIC. The invitational wraps up with the Green and Whites' first match in program history against Belmont.
Eastern Michigan returns to Washtenaw County for the Michigan Challenge, Sept. 17-18, to wrap up non-conference play. The Eagles will travel north to Ann Arbor to take on Big Ten Conference opponent Michigan before squaring off against 2021 spring NCAA qualifier Dayton. The Green and White will finish the weekend by welcoming Boston College to the Convocation Center for the first time in program history, Sept. 18.
Following non-conference play, the Eagles will close out the season with 18-straight MAC matches, vying for one of the coveted top-six spots to qualify for the 2021 MAC Volleyball Tournament. The regular season champion will host the tournament.
"The MAC will be strong, yet balanced once again," Dorton explained. "Every team is competitive and we will see a mix of veteran and young talent that will demand we bring our best every night."
Eastern opens MAC play with in-state rival Western Michigan University, Sept. 23-24, inside the Convo.
The 2021 campaign will mark the third season with Dorton leading the Eagles, while it also signifies the 45th season of varsity volleyball competition at EMU.
