SYRACUSE, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) –
In a match that saw all three goals in the final 26 minutes, the Eastern Michigan University soccer team fell to Syracuse by a score of 2-1 on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 29, inside SU Soccer Stadium.

"I know it sounds a bit cliche, but we made another big step in our development going toe-to-toe on the road with an ACC opponent and giving ourselves a chance to win," Head Coach Scott Hall remarked. "We are very close with this group and cannot wait to get back to Scicluna Field this week and prepare ourselves for another weekend of games!"

Freshman Maddie O'Farrell (Haslett, Mich.-Lansing Catholic) tallied the Eagles' score in the matinee, but it was not enough for the Green and White as the Orange scored twice in the final 18 minutes to take the victory.

In a game of firsts, O'Farrell recorded her first career goal and EMU's first goal of the 2021 campaign in the first-ever contest between Syracuse and Eastern Michigan. Fellow freshmen Sophia D'Ambra (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard South), Ashley Schneider (Johnstown, Ohio-Johnstown Monroe), and Jamie Lefebvre (London, Ontario-A.B. Lucas Secondary) all made their first collegiate start for Eastern on Sunday.

It was also an afternoon of firsts for sophomore keeper Rebecca Przybylo (Canton, Mich.-Plymouth) who started her second consecutive match in net for the Eagles for the first time in her collegiate career. Przybylo made her second start of the season, tallying a game-high six saves in net for the Green and White.

Senior Lindsey Shira (New Baltimore, Mich.-Anchor Bay), junior Simone Chiodo (Oshawa, Ontario-Monsignor Paul Dwyer Catholic), and freshman Lexy Alston (Amherst, Ohio-Marion L. Steele) each recorded a shot for the Eagles on Sunday.

In the first 45 minutes, neither offense could find the back of the net. The Orange out-shot EMU 13-2 in the first half and earned six corner kick chances to the Eagles' one chance.

After the break, Eastern Michigan got out to a one-goal lead when O'Farrell scored into the bottom left corner of the net on a rebound chance from an EMU penalty kick opportunity in the 64th
minute. The Eagles held the lead for nine minutes until the Orange scored in the 73rd minute to bring the game back to a tie at one-all.

Syracuse secured the game-winning score in the 88th minute to hand the Eagles their fourth loss of the season.

Eastern Michigan returns to Ypsilanti, Mich. for a two-match homestand, taking on St. Bonaventure, Sept. 3, and Morehead State (Sept. 5).
