The award is given annually to the nation’s best tight end
NEW YORK, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) — The Friends of John Mackey released the 2021 John Mackey Award Preseason Watch List today, July 23. Representing the Eastern Michigan University football team on the list is senior tight end Thomas Odukoya (Almere, Netherlands-Helen Parkhurst-Garden City C.C.). The 2021 campaign marks the third consecutive season in which Odukoya has received the honor.
The John Mackey Award is given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end. The award recipient is selected by a vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee. The 2021 Mackey Award recipient will be announced in December at The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show.
A 2020 Academic All-MAC honoree, Odukoya was selected a team captain as well as being named to the watch list for the Wuerffel Trophy and John Mackey Award Watch List. He was elected to wear the coveted No. 2 jersey, dubbed "The Deuce," within the program, for the season. Odukoya competed in all six games as the Eagles starting tight end in 2020. He hauled in two passes, both for touchdowns, in EMU's first game, against Kent State, Nov. 4. Odukoya also recorded career-bests in both yards (33), and longest reception (20 yards) just one week later at Ball State, Nov. 11. He finished the season with five receptions for 48 yards and two scores en route to becoming a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy.
