Men’s Basketball Adds Another Highly Skilled Transfer, James “Monty” Scott

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University men's basketball and first-year Head Coach Stan Heath signed James "Monty" Scott (Union, N.J.-St. Benedict's Prep (Portland State)) to the team's 2021-22 roster, the team announced today, June 22.
Scott hails from Union, N.J. and will join the Eagles after spending the 2020-21 season at Portland State University. The guard will be considered a graduate student in the classroom, but a senior athletically for the 2021-22 campaign.
"Monty is a scorer and is a great all-around player. He can get baskets in a lot of different ways: three-point shooting, mid-range, and getting to the basket," said Heath. "He is a player with experience and will have one season remaining with us. He will be a seasoned veteran that will give us high production on the court."
Scott started in all 22 games for Portland State in 2020-21, and led the Vikings in scoring with 13.7 points per game. The All-Big Sky Honorable Mention selection surpassed the 1,000-career point plateau in a combined four seasons at Kennesaw State, Temple, and PSU. He currently has 1,209 points in 103 career games. The guard posted four 20-point games with his best outing in a win over Weber State, Dec. 20, with a 26-point, six-rebound, six-steal, and three-assist effort.
Prior to arriving at Portland State, Scott played at Temple University during the 2019-20 season, where averaged 20.0 minutes and 7.2 points per game as a reserve for the Owls. The guard tallied double figures nine times, including a season-high 25 points against the University of Connecticut. Scott also earned a redshirt during the 2018-19 season due to NCAA transfer rules.
Scott started his collegiate basketball career at Kennesaw State, where he played two seasons (2016-18) for the Owls. During his second season, the guard started in 29 games, where he led the team with 17.3 points per game and 50 total steals. His points-per-game average ranked third in the Atlantic Sun Conference. As a freshman, Scott was named to the ASUN All-Freshman Team after averaging 8.5 points per game in 15.4 minutes of action. Additionally, he set a career-high in points with 33 at Stetson, Feb. 9.
The Union, N.J. native graduated from St. Benedict's Prep under coaches Mark Taylor and Art Pierson. Scott, a four-year letterwinner, recorded over 1,000 career points for the Gray Bees and earned First Team All-State honors. The 6-foot-5 guard led St. Benedict to a 26-2 record and averaged 17.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 2.0 steals during his senior campaign. Additionally, Scott was named to the First Team All-County and First Team All-Conference teams twice.
Eastern Michigan continues its offseason schedule and prepares for the 2021-22 season with Coach Heath at the helm of the program.
