The game was the third-straight with three-or-more Eagles recording multiple-hit performances
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Led by a 12-run first inning, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team defeated the University of Toledo, 13-2, May 4 at Oestrike Stadium.
The 13-run performance pushed Eastern Michigan (13-19, 7-14 MAC) to 46 total runs over the past three games, marking the first time the Eagles have scored 40-or-more runs in the same span since April 17-22, 2009. Moreover, Eastern has scored 12-or-more runs in three consecutive games for the first time since May 12-15, 2013.
Senior lefty Scott Granzotto (Northville, Mich.-Gabriel Richard) picked up his second win of the season on the mound, throwing 4.0 innings and striking out a season-high five batters. Sophomore Cameron Wagoner (Tecumseh, Mich-Tecumseh) tossed 2.0 innings of his own, giving up no runs and allowing only two hits while striking out two in his frames. Closing it out was sophomore Trevor House (Okeana, Ohio-Ross), who struck out two-of-three batters he faced in his one inning on the mound. Additionally, no walks were issued by the EMU pitching staff.
At the plate, three Eagles had multiple-hit performances. Senior Christian Bault (Maineville, Ohio-Archbishop Moeller (Lincoln Trail)) led the way with three hits and four RBIs. Junior Taylor Hopkins (Mason, Ohio-Archbishop Moeller) and senior Mike Monahan (Saline, Mich.-Saline) each added two hits, while Monahan also had an RBI.
Granzotto put the Rockets down in order in the first, striking out two and forcing a groundout to open the game.
Deciding a 33-run weekend was not enough, the Eastern Michigan offense was on fire from its first batter. A 12-run, nine-hit, 16-batter half-inning ensued, marking the highest opening scoring frame for the Eagles this season, and first time the Green and White have scored that many runs in a single inning since April 11, 2012, at Michigan State, in a 13-5 victory. The frame was also the first double-digit scoring frame for Eastern since scoring 10 in the ninth inning against UT Martin, Feb. 21, 2014.
Eight Eagles reached base on seven hits and one walk, taking a 5-0 lead before the first out was recorded. A single from Hopkins led off the game for Eastern, and was followed by a first-pitch single to left center from senior Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview), putting two on for Bault. Plating the first run of the inning, Bault turned the first pitch he saw into a double down the right field line, scoring Hopkins for the 1-0 Eagle lead.
Junior Gabe Denton (Clare, Mich.-Clare (North Iowa)) stepped to the plate next, singling on the right line to add a pair of runs to the Eagles' lead. Seniors Shane Easter (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Comstock) and Eli Gora (Cincinnati, Ohio-Anderson) singled to opposite sides of the field in the following at-bats, with Gora's hit scoring one, setting the stage for Monahan to continue his hit streak. With a single to left, Monahan added the Eagles' fifth run of the frame.
After the first out of the inning was recorded on the base path, junior Will Oberg (Wayzata, Minn-Wayzata (Heartland)) used his first at-bat of the game to put another single down the right field line and give the Eagles the 6-0 advantage. He was followed by Jones drawing a bases-loaded walk at the plate, marking the second time in three games the captain has reached base twice in the same inning.
His second time at the plate in the first, Bault notched his second and third RBIs with a single to right field to add a pair of runs to the Eagles' lead, 9-0. Eastern Michigan would score its final three runs of the inning by capitalizing on wild pitches, as Jones, Denton, and Bault would all cross the plate for the second time in the first and close out the first with a 12-0 Green and White advantage.
Eastern would hold its lead until the fourth inning, when Toledo scored a pair of runs to cut Eastern's lead to 10, 12-2.
The Green and White would get a run back an inning later, as Hopkins would find himself on base after a double, and would score two batters later on a single to left center by Bault, his fourth RBI of the day.
Holding its 13-2 lead through the sixth, House entered to pitch in the seventh, retiring the Rocket batters in 1-2-3 fashion to seal the mercy-rule win for Eastern Michigan, 13-2.
The Green and White travel to Bowling Green, Ohio to take on Bowling Green State University, Friday-Sunday, May 7-9. Game times are set for 3 p.m. Friday, 12 and 3 p.m. Saturday, and 1 p.m. Sunday.
