Eastern Athletics Continues Academic Excellence

Student-athletes posted a 3.195 semester GPA and 3.369 cumulative GPA
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – It was another impressive semester in the classroom for the Eastern Michigan University Department of Athletics despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. For the 23rd straight semester, EMU student-athletes posted an average term Grade Point Average (GPA) above 3.0.
With more than 400 student-athletes, Eastern recorded a 3.195 winter semester GPA. EMU also added a cumulative 3.369 GPA.
"Our student-athletes continued to excel academically in the face of unprecedented circumstances," said EMU Vice President/Director of Athletics Scott Wetherbee. "They utilized their resources, remained diligent in their studies, and collaborated with their faculty members. Our academics staff continues to provide student-athletes with the support they needed despite the many challenges with remote learning. Additionally, the focus from our coaches on the student-athletes' well-being, their constant contact with their teams and the reinforcement of the importance of finishing strong in the classroom was a huge factor in this success."
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, student-athletes overcame the challenges of a hybrid or completely virtual learning model. Overall, 70 percent (310) still earned a 3.0 GPA or higher for the fall semester, and 12 of Eastern's sports had term GPAs of 3.0 or higher.
Furthermore, there were 58 EMU student-athletes with perfect 4.0 GPAs last semester, led by rowing which had eight.
For the semester, gymnastics led all sports with a term GPA of 3.754 on EMU's 4.0 scale. Tennis (3.708) was next, while swimming & diving (3.513) was third. Men's cross country (3.494) and soccer (3.447) rounded out the top five programs for the winter semester.
Overall, a total of 336 student-athletes (76 percent) hold a cumulative GPA above 3.0, while 14 teams maintain a cumulative GPA above 3.0.
