Eagles Earn Fourth MAC Doubles Weekly Honors

Ganesan and Popma collect the honor for the second time this season

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University tennis team saw its No. 1 doubles pair earn Mid-American Conference Doubles Team of the Week status Wednesday, March 7, as announced by the league office. This is the second time redshirt junior Vasavi Ganesan (Tamil Nadu, India-Alagappa Matriculation School (Eastern Florida State)) and redshirt freshman Isabelle Popma (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education) have collected the honor this season, as they also earned the award Feb. 3.

Eastern Michigan's No. 1 duo joins redshirt juniors Luisa Pelayo (Porto, Portugal-Colegio CEBES (Wright State)) and Grace Whitney (Imlay, City, Mich.-Imlay City (Wright State)), who have also tallied two MAC Doubles Team of the Week honors in the 2021 season. Additionally, this is the sixth weekly award for the Green and White this year from the conference. 

Ganesan and Popma went 2-0 on the weekend at No. 1 against Butler and Indiana Tech, April 2. The pairing dominated their Bulldog opponent 6-1, before heading to Warrior territory and downing the opposition there, 6-2. Together, the pair of Eagles improve their record to 5-3 at No. 1, and 7-3 overall. 

Coming up this weekend, Eastern returns to MAC play as they host Bowling Green State University, Friday, April 9. Action inside the Chippewa Club is set to begin at 1 p.m. Following a short trip down US 23, the Eagles will challenge Toledo for the second time this season Sunday, April 11. The match UT's Varsity Tennis Courts at 1 p.m.
