The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped a pair of games to Miami University, Saturday, April 3, at Oestrike Stadium. The RedHawks took the first game, 4-1, and second, 5-0.

The losses drop the Eagles to 8-12 overall and 4-7 in Mid-American Conference play, while the RedHawks improved to 16-9 overall and 9-2 in league play.

Game One: Miami 4, Eastern Michigan 1

Unable to find much momentum on offense, Eastern Michigan fell to Miami, 4-1, in the opening game of the doubleheader, April 3.

On the bump for the Eagles, junior Justin Meis (Pittsburg, Pa.-Bethel Park) was able to go six strong innings, giving up four earned runs, while striking out a season-high eight batters. In the seventh, Trevor House (Okeana, Ohio-Ross) and Justin Reinkall (Superior, Wisc.-Superior (Southeast Community)) combined to sit the RedHawks down 1-2-3.

At the plate, EMU collected five hits and three walks, with seniors Jeff Timko (Rochester Hills, Mich.-Brother Rice), Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview), Shane Easter (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Comstock), Jared Kauffman (Springboro, Ohio-Bishop Fenwick) and Nate Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) each collecting one hit apiece.

The RedHawks were able to strike early, collecting two runs in the opening frame. Finding his groove, Meis was able to retire the next nine Miami hitters. However, the RedHawks would add runs in the fourth and fifth innings to push its advantage to 4-0.

Though trailing throughout, the Eagles saw a couple of opportunities to work themselves back into the contest. The Green and White loaded the bases with two outs in the second inning, but the RedHawks were able to get out of the jam with a strikeout. In the fourth, EMU got the first two hitters on before a double play and groundout to second ended the threat.

With one last chance at a comeback, Nate Jones launched a two-out double into left centerfield, keeping the Eagles' hopes alive. Easter then came through with an RBI single to center to put the Eagles on the board, 4-1. In the end, though, Miami would close the door on the comeback effort, getting the next hitter to pop out, which ending the game in the visitor's favor, 4-1.

Game Two: Miami 5, Eastern Michigan 0

Plagued by errors and limited offense, Eastern Michigan fell to Miami, 5-0, in the second game of the afternoon.

The Eagles utilized a variety of pitchers in the contest, sending seven different hurlers to the mound. After five runners crossed the plate in the first two innings, seniors John Holt (Saline, Mich.-Saline), and Holden Cook (Oklahoma City, Okla.-Casady), freshman Nick Chittum (Grosse Ile, Mich.-Grosse Ile), and sophomores Luke Russo (Howell, Mich.-Howell) and Tyler Helgeson (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) settled things down, each tossing a scoreless inning. In total, the EMU arms allowed four earned runs and struck out four Miami hitters.

The offensive struggles continued into the second game, as the Green and White could only muster two hits. Freshman Evan Sines (Lancaster, Ohio-Lancaster) and senior Christian Bault (Maineville, Ohio-Archbishop Moeller (Lincoln Trail)) picked up the only base knocks for the Eagles in the contest.

After striking early in the opener, the RedHawks opened the second game with some more firepower. An EMU error brought home the first run of the game,  and a shallow single with the bases loaded plated three more for Miami. With the Green and White going down in order, the RedHawks had the lead, 4-0, after one inning. Miami would leadoff th second with a solo home run to take a 5-0 lead.

In the Eagles' offensive portion of the second, Bault launched a double to the center field wall, giving the Eagles their first scoring chance of the contest. However, the threat would be neutralized, and Miami would carry that advantage into the middle innings.

The RedHawks threatened again in the top of the fifth inning, loading the bases with one out. In his first appearance of the season, Chittum was able to work out of the jam, getting two Miami hitters to pop out, keeping the deficit at 5-0.

Silenced all game by the Miami hurlers, the Green and White found one hit into the final two frames. In search of base runners,  Sines lined a base hit into left to leadoff the bottom of the sixth in an attempt to start a rally. As they had all game, however, the RedHawks stymied the attack and carried their five run lead into the final inning.

Miami loaded the bases again in the top of the seventh inning, but Helgeson was able to slam the door on the threat and pass the baton to the EMU bats for one last opportunity. The Eagles would go down in order to finish the seventh, giving the RedHawks a 5-0 victory.

Eastern Michigan will get another crack at the RedHawks when the two squads take the field tomorrow, Sunday, April 4, at Oestrike Stadium. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
