The Green and White look to earn back-to-back MAC wins

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University tennis team has a short travel weekend as it heads to Western Michigan University Friday, April 23, before returning home and welcoming Miami University to the Chippewa Club Sunday, April 25. The matches are scheduled to start at 1 and 2 p.m., respectively.

Eastern (10-13; 1-9 MAC) lost two close matches to conference foes last weekend, falling first at Ball State, 3-4, April 16. Two days later, EMU lost again, 3-4, this time to Northern Illinois, April 18. Both the Cardinals and Huskies bested the Eagles, 1-6, in the first meetings of the season, back on March 12 and 14, respectively. The Green and White cruised to a win over Grace College after the BSU match, April 16. The squad beat the Lancers 6-1 in Winona Lake, Ind.

Entering the weekend, Western Michigan (13-5; 5-5 MAC) currently sits in the middle of the MAC with a .500 win percentage in league action. The Broncos are coming off two losses, April 16 and 18, in which they lost to Miami, 3-4, and Bowling Green, 2-5, respectively. Miami (8-11; 2-8 MAC) is within striking distance in the standings, having only won one more conference matchup than Eastern Michigan. The RedHawks hold league wins over EMU and WMU, with their most recent result being a loss to Toledo, 3-4, April 18.

The Green and White have seen strong performances in both doubles and singles recently, starting with redshirt juniors Luisa Pelayo (Porto, Portugal-Colegio CEBES (Wright State)) and Grace Whitney (Imlay City, Mich.-Imlay City (Wright State)) earning two wins against Ball State and Grace College (April 16) at No 2. The pairing continues to be the Eagles' strongest doubles team, totaling 15 wins so far this season. Redshirt junior Vasavi Ganesan (Tamil Nadu, India-Alagappa Matriculation School (Eastern Florida State)) and redshirt freshman Isabelle Popma (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education) are second on the team with 10 wins, eight of which have come in the No. 1 spot. Furthermore, Ganesan and Popma earned their third MAC Doubles Team of the Week accolade this season Wednesday, April 21.

Pelayo bested two MAC opponents last weekend to earn singles wins 13 and 14 overall, with both victories coming at No. 3. The redshirt junior defeated her BSU opponent (April 16), 6-2, 6-4, and then bested the NIU opposition (April 18), 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. Tying the Portugal native with 14 singles wins this season is redshirt freshman Emma-Lou Pommiers (Aire-sur-L'Adour, France-Saint Dominique Pau), who also saw two wins in singles competition last weekend. Pommiers won at No. 2 at Grace College (April 16), 6-1, 6-1, and then claimed victory against the Huskies, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 4.
