YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University baseball team fell to Miami University, 4-3, in its home opener and the first game of the four-game series between the teams, April 2, at Oestrike Stadium.

Senior Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) went two-for-two with a pair of singles, a hit-by-pitch, and a sacrifice bunt. Seniors Jared Kauffman (Springboro, Ohio-Bishop Fenwick) and Jeff Timko (Rochester Hills, Mich.-Brother Rice) logged an RBI each while fellow senior Eli Gora (Cincinnati, Ohio-Anderson) notched the first triple of his career and scored a run.

On the mound, sophomore Cameron Wagoner (Tecumseh, Mich.-Tecumseh) was impressive in relief, pitching scoreless eighth and ninth innings, striking out three batters, and allowing just one hit and one walk. Veteran Davis Feldman (Warren, Mich.-Brother Rice) got the start for the home opener, his first start at Oestrike Stadium in 1,417 days, and went seven strong innings, striking out five while only allowing three earned runs.

It didn't take long for Feldman to establish himself on the mound as he opened the game up with a three-pitch strikeout. He then worked around a one-out triple with back-to-back strikeouts. Jones and Kattula logged singles in the bottom half of the first, but the EMU could not find a run.

The RedHawks struck first with a three-run home run in the top of the second, to take the early 3-0 lead. Miami threatened again in the third inning, but with men on second and third and one out, junior Taylor Hopkins (Mason, Ohio-Archbishop Moeller) made the heads-up play to go home with the throw on a ground ball and got the runner at the plate. Feldman would log an out on the next batter and work himself out of the jam thanks to some stellar defense and well-placed pitches.

The top of the fourth saw some more solid defensive work as the Eagles turned a no-out double play, the first of four in the game for the Eagles, to halt any potential momentum for Miami in the top half of the inning.

The defensive momentum turned into some positive at-bats for the Eagles in the bottom of the frame, as Gora led off with a triple, and Kauffman drove him in with an RBI groundout to pull the Eagles within two, 3-1.

Miami struck back in the top of the fifth with an RBI single to make it 4-1, but the Green and White was quick to respond, piecing together a run with a Jones hit by pitch, Hopkins double, and Timko sac fly to make it 4-2 after five complete.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Eagles manufactured another run with Oberg walking to lead off the inning, getting to second on a sacrifice bunt, moving to third on a groundout, and then scoring on a wild pitch to make it 4-3.

The Eagles looked to get back into the game, however, the RedHawks held EMU hitless during the final two frames to capture the win, 4-3.

Eastern Michigan and Miami will play games two and three of the four-game series tomorrow, April 3, in a seven-inning doubleheader, with the first game starting at 1 p.m. from Oestrike Stadium.
