Eagles Post Strong Showing on Second Day of MAC Championships

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University swimming and diving team completed the second day of the Mid-American Conference Championships, April 16, at Jones Natatorium, sitting in sixth place after two days of action with 204 points.
 
Starting the day with the preliminaries, Eastern qualified three swimmers to the championship finals and two to the consolation finals.

Senior Riley Hofmann (Ada, Mich.-Forest Hills Central) swam a personal-best 4:20.17 in the preliminaries for the 400 IM, finishing fourth overall to lock in her appearance in the championship final. Sophomore Lainie Bell (Atlanta, Ga.-Druid Hills) and senior Ali Staver (Bettendorf, Iowa-Pleasant Valley) both claimed spots in the championship final of the 100 backstroke, finishing seventh and eighth with times of 54.98 and 55.05, respectively.

Staver also claimed a spot in the 100 butterfly consolation final, swimming a season-best 55.77 in the event. Sophomore Carlin Hudson (Chattanooga, Tenn.-Chattanooga School for the Arts & Sciences) punched her ticket to the consolation final with a season-best swim of 1:52.30 in the 200 free.

Six Eagles also posted season-best times in the morning session over four events. In the 100 butterfly, sophomores Hannah White (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel) and Kayla Whitehead (Ottawa, Ontario-Colonel By Secondary) clocked in at 56.39 and 57.63, respectively for new season standards, while freshman Abbey Whiple (State College, Penn.-State College Area) and senior Kaitlynd Scanlan (Waukesha, Wis.-Pewaukee) swam for season-bests in the In the 200 freestyle prelims, finishing with times of 1:54.29 and 1:58.10, respectively.

Whitehead and Scanlan added second season-best times in the 100 breaststroke, recording 1:05.19 and 1:08.35 marks, respectively. Staver's championship-qualifying mark of 55.05 in the 100 backstroke was also a season-best, while freshman Katie Shoen (Owego, N.Y.-Owego Free Academy) finished with a season-best 59.19 in the event.

For the second-straight day, all three Eastern divers qualified for the finals, this time in 3-meter diving. Freshman Camryn Hughes (London, Ontario-Sir Frederick Banting Secondary) and newly-crowned 1-meter champion, senior Bethany Berger (Batavia, Ohio-Glen Este) finished fourth (268.45) and seventh (247.00), respectively, for spots in the championship final, while senior Micaela Schempf (Bowling Green, Ohio-Bowling Green) finished 14th for a spot in the consolation finals with her score of 221.40.

Returning to the pool in the evening, Hofmann started things off for the Eagles in the 400 IM championship final, touching the wall sixth with a time of 4:20.52, only a shade off the career-high 4:40.17 she swam in the prelims. Continuing to set new personal standards, Bell (54.25) and Staver (54.88) to finish sixth and eighth, respectively, in the 100 backstroke championship final with career-high swims.

In the consolation finals, finishing second in the 200 fly consolation final was Staver, swimming a season-best 54.83, while Hudson finished the 100 free consolation final in a career-best 1:51.96 to earn fourth. Schempf finished at the top of the field in the 1-meter diving consolation finals with a score of 265.90.

The Eagles will close out the season with the final day of the MAC Championships tomorrow, April 17, beginning with preliminaries at 10:30 a.m. The finals session, along with senior recognition, will begin at 6:10 p.m.
