Amanda Cripps led the offensive effort with seven shots
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan soccer team suffered its first setback of the season, falling 4-0 to Western Michigan University, March 7, at Waldo Stadium.
The Eagles were able to control the first half, holding the advantage in possession time (57%-43%) and shots (11-6) during the first 45 minutes. Coming out firing early, junior Kylie Frantz (Erie, Pa.-Villa Maria Academy) drilled a shot from the top of the box, but the shot was saved by the Western Michigan goalkeeper. Sophomore Amanda Cripps (Bradford, Ontario-Trinity Catholic) and senior Alia Frederick (Linden, Mich.-Linden) each saw looks over the next 10 minutes, but the Broncos' defense was able to block the shot attempts from the Green and White.
Freshman Lexy Alston (Amherst, Ohio-Marion L. Steele) and redshirt senior Sabrina McNeill (Whitby, Ontario-Henry Street) synced up for a pair of scoring attempts later in the first, with Alston finding McNeill in the box on both tries. Unfortunately for the Eagles, the WMU defense was able to thwart the first chance, while McNeill's header went wide on the second.
Earning back-to-back corners in the final minutes of the opening half, Eastern was unable to convert on either try, sending the game into halftime scoreless, 0-0.
Out of the break, it was Western Michigan that controlled the first 15 minutes of the second. The Broncos earned an early corner in the 47th minute, capitalizing on the try to take the lead, 1-0. Looking for the equalizer in the 55th minute, McNeill broke free from her defender to make her way into the box, but sent her shot just a tad high as it bounced off the crossbar.
The Broncos added goals in the 56th, 59th, and 68th minutes to build their lead out to 4-0.
Making one last effort to find the back of the net, Eastern was awarded a free kick at the top of the box in the 70th minute. While the WMU keeper stopped the initial shot by McNeill, Cripps was able to get a hold of the rebound, but placed her shot high to give the Broncos possession back. Although finishing the match with the advantage in shots, 17-to-14, the Eagles ultimately fell, 4-0.
In goal, senior Chelsea Abbotts (Ottawa, Ontario-Mother Teresa) recorded four saves, while sophomore Rebecca Przybylo (Canton, Mich.-Plymouth) saw her first action of the 2021 campaign, appearing in the final nine minutes of action.
The Green and White return to the pitch next Sunday, March 14, at Northern Illinois. Game time is set for 3 p.m. at a site to be announced closer to gameday.
