BLOOMFIELD TWP., Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team made the short trip to Bloomfield Twp., Mich for a match against Oakland University today, Feb. 6, and defeated the Golden Grizzlies 6-1. The Eagles go 3-0 over a two-week stretch against OU, and move to 6-4 overall.

"Oakland definitely came out with a lot of energy in doubles and early in single play," said Head Coach Jayson Wiseman. "We did a great job of staying with them and then we were able to pull away for the win. We got great performances from the middles of our lineup in singles, in a match that was the most competitive of the three we've played against Oakland. This was great preparation for our first MAC match on Friday "

Eastern started doubles play with a point at No. 3, as Oakland was not at full strength and forced to default, giving a win to redshirt junior Vasavi Ganesan (Tamil Nadu, India-Alagappa Matriculation School (Eastern Florida State)) and Emma-Lou Pommiers (Aire-sur-I'Adour, France-Saint Dominique Pau). Securing the doubles point was the redshirt junior duo of Luisa Pelayo (Porto, Portugal-Colegio Cebes (Wright State)) and Grace Whitney (Imlay City, Mich. Imlay City (Wright State)), finishing the matchup 6-2 at the No. 2 spot.

It was redshirt senior Essence Eaton (Southfield, Mich.-Southfield Lathrup) who received the default win at No. 6. Pelayo dominated her match at No. 3, holding her opponent scoreless in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. The Porto, Portugal native moves to 9-1 this season in singles. Pommiers was the next to earn a point for Eastern, finishing 6-4 and 6-1 at No. 4. At the No. 2 spot, Ganesan secured a win in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1, while redshirt sophomore Julia Piatek (Melgiew, Poland-Liceum Lublin (Salem)) claimed the final point for the Green and White (3-6, 7-6, 1-0) at No. 5. With the Eagles' 6-1 victory over the Golden Grizzlies, the Green and White earn its sixth win of the season.

Eastern now turns its sights to Mid-American Conference action as they welcome Ball State University to the Chippewa Club Friday, March 12. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
