YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team will open the Convocation Center doors one final time in the 2021 season. The Eagles welcome the United States Air Force Academy, Bowling Green State University, and Iowa State University Sunday, March 7, at 1 p.m., for Senior Day.
EMU defeated Northern Illinois (195.150-194.825) on Feb. 19, and then lost to Western Michigan (195.975-196.025) Feb. 21, before earning a week off. USAFA is coming off a second-place finish (193.350) at home against Arizona and Texas Women's University, while BGSU is still in search of its first win, losing most recently to Central Michigan (193.750-195.975), Feb. 28. Iowa State was a last-minute addition to the meet and won its latest contest against West Virginia (196.375-193.900), March 1. The Cyclones compete again Friday, March 5, at the Northern Illinois Triangular, before traveling to Ypsilanti.
FOLLOWING THE MEET: The meet can be streamed on EPSN3 where Tom Helmer and Ashlee Buhler will have the call. Fans can also follow along on EMUEagles.com via live stats, or on Twitter, @EMUGym.
ONE GOAL, QUALIFY: If the 2021 season ended today, Eastern currently sits 28th in the nation with a team national qualifying score of 195.688. With the top-36 teams qualifying for NCAA Regionals, the Eagles' last two meets could punch their ticket to the show.
CALL IT A COMEBACK: Sophomore Molly Parris is making an impact after missing the majority of her freshman year due to injury. Parris has recorded career-highs on bars and beam with scores of 9.850 at the Eagle Invite (Feb. 6) and at Northern Illinois (Feb. 29), respectively.
BEAMTOWN: Continuing to turn up the heat on beam and ranking first in the Mid-American Conference, the Eagles are making a case for Ypsilanti to become Beamtown. The squad has an NQS of 49.088 on the apparatus after setting a program record 49.350 at Western Michigan, Feb. 21.
Three Eagles rank in the top-10 in the league. Junior Caitlin Satler is second, with an NQS of 9.894 on the apparatus, while senior Jada Rondeau sits third (9.863), and sophomore Hadyn Crossen (9.838) is tied for seventh.
APPARATUS APPRECIATION IN THE NATION: Eastern Michigan currently ranks 24th on beam and 26th on bars in the NCAA. The beam squad holds a national qualifying score of 49.088, while the bars lineup has earned a 49.000 NQS this season.
REDO THE RECORD BOOK: The Eagles had a big day Feb. 21 at Western Michigan, even with the loss, 195.975-196.025, to the Broncos. The Green and White posted the highest beam score in program history, 49.350, and totaled a season-high team score of 195.975. Leading the beam squad was senior Jada Rondeau who earned a 9.950 to claim second all-time in EMU history on the apparatus. Junior Shannon Gregory also hit a personal-best 9.875, finishing third in the meet. Senior Brianna Price added a season-high 9.825 to boost the record-breaking score. The team's season-high score of 195.975 ties for ninth all-time in the program's history.
This year's squad has made seven additions to the record book this season; Cortney Bezold (9.900, bars), Jada Rondeau (9.950, beam), Caitlin Satler (9.925, beam), Hadyn Crossen (9.900, beam), and Rondeau, Satler, and Kara Roberts (9.900, floor).
WHO CAN OUTDO RONDEAU?: Senior Jada Rondeau has come alive late in the season and is working to cement her name in the EMU history books. Rondeau posted a 9.950 on beam at Western Michigan (Feb. 21), and overtook her teammate Caitlin Satler (9.925) for sole ownership of the number two spot all-time in the event. The senior also finds herself tied for 15th on floor, after earning a 9.900 in the Eagle Invitational, Feb. 6. The Savage, Minn. native has tallied the same national qualifying score in both beam and bars (9.863), which puts her third and tied for third in the conference, respectively.
LAST TIME AGAINST AIR FORCE: This is not the first meeting between the Eagles and Falcons this season, as they both competed at the GymQuarters Invitational, Feb. 12. Eastern topped USAFA in the meet, 193.975-190.900, and finished second in the competition behind Ball State (194.275).
The Green and White saw big performances on bars as senior Cortney Bezold tied for first, scoring 9.875, while classmate Jada Rondeau finished fourth with her score of 9.850. On beam, Rondeau and junior Caitlin Satler hit 9.875, tying for first place. Junior Carly Kosanovich was able to tie for second with a score of 9.800 on floor.
LAST TIME AGAINST BOWLING GREEN: The Eagles did not face Bowling Green at full force Jan. 24, as the Falcons were unable to put together full lineups and were defeated, 194.775-142.075.
In the win, EMU saw junior Shannon Gregory earn a career-best 9.850 on beam, allowing her to claim first place in the event. On vault, the Green and White captured first, with sophomore Molly Parris and junior Kara Roberts tying with a score of 9.750. Senior Cortney Bezold took home the bars gold, scoring 9.850, while classmate Jada Rondeau followed behind with a 9.825 to earn silver. Additionally, junior Caitlin Satler tied for first on floor, hitting 9.825.
FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING: Sunday, March 7 will be the first time Eastern Michigan and Iowa State compete against one another in gymnastics. The Eagles' program dates back to 1976, with contests against Midwest foes Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Louisville, but never ISU.
THE KATIE CONNECTION: EMU Head Coach Katie Minasola came to Ypsilanti after six years in Ames, Iowa under Cyclones Head Coach Jay Ronayne. Minasola was an assistant coach from 2011-16 before being promoted to Associate Head Gymnastics Coach in 2016. The following year, Minasola accepted the head position at Eastern. While at ISU, the Massachusetts graduate focused on beam and assisted in the choreography for floor routines.
STACK AGAINST THE MAC: In the current team rankings, Eastern (195.688) sits third in the Mid-American Conference, behind Central Michigan (195.819), and Western Michigan (195.769). The Green and White lead the MAC on beam (49.088). On bars, EMU is again first in the conference (49.000), with Kent State close behind (48.994). The Eagles sit fifth in the league on floor and vault, with NQS scores of 49.069 and 48.744, respectively.
HONORING THE SENIORS: Eastern Michigan will honor three seniors this year after the EMU Quad. Cortney Bezold, Brianna Price, and Jada Rondeau will be celebrated by the EMU home crowd before hitting the road to Central Michigan (March 13) and closing out the 2021 regular season.
Bezold competed on bars all four years at Eastern and has scored a 9.900 three times in her career. That score ties her for ninth all-time in the event. In 2019, the Maineville, Ohio native was selected to the All-MAC First Team, honored as a part of the Google Cloud All-District Team by CoSIDA, named MAC Specialist of the Week twice, and qualified for regionals individually.
Price ends her Eagle career with personal-bests of 9.875 on beam and 9.800 on floor. The Kings Mountain, N.C. native is a two-time Academic All-MAC selection and earned the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) Academic All-American nod in 2020.
In all-around, Rondeau is tied for the 15th best score by an Eagle, 39.275. In the senior's career, she has tallied career-highs of 9.800 on vault, 9.875 on bars, 9.900 on floor, and 9.950 on beam. The Savage, Minn. native has ensured she will be remembered, as her high scores on floor and beam tie for 15th and sit 2nd, respectively. The senior was an All-MAC Second Team selection in 2020 and has racked up 46 scores of 9.825-or-better in her career, across all four events.
EASTERN MICHIGAN 49ERS?: The Green and White have now hit 49+ seven times this season, with the most recent coming Feb. 21 at Western Michigan when the beam lineup hit 49.350 for a program record in the event.
BEZOLD, THE BARS BALLAST: Senior Cortney Bezold, the only gymnast on the team to have competed in an NCAA regional competition, once again leads the bars lineup for Eastern. Bezold is averaging 9.869 on the apparatus in the season and sitting second in the Mid-American Conference. The senior was tied for third in the conference when the 2020 season ended. Furthermore, the Maineville, Ohio native earned MAC Specialist of the Week honors, Jan. 26, for the fourth time in her career, and has claimed a podium finish on the event in six of nine meets so far this season.
EAGLES ON ESPN3: For the fourth consecutive season, the Eagles will have their home meets broadcast on ESPN3. This season, fans will be able to watch their Eagles compete against MAC-opponent Bowling Green, Jan. 24, and close out the season with Senior Night against Bowling Green and Air Force in the Eastern Michigan Triangular, March 7.
BLINK AND IT'S HERE: The Mid-American Conference Championship meet is the culminating event for gymnastics. It was only 2017 the last time the Eagles topped the league and hoisted the MAC trophy. This year's competition will take place at Western Michigan Sunday, March 21 at 2 p.m.
