Ty Groce recorded 21 points to lead the Eagles
MUNCIE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball program dropped a Mid-American Conference affair at Ball State University, 100-65, tonight, March 2, inside BSU's Worthen Arena. The Eagles (5-12, 2-11 MAC) could not contain the Cardinals' (10-11, 8-8 MAC) lights out shooting with a 52.1 percent clip (37-of-71).
Three Eagles recorded double-figure scoring performances with redshirt senior Ty Groce (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Lincoln) leading the way with 21 points, including seven free throws. The forward also contributed a team-high seven rebounds and added two assists. Classmate Noah Morgan (Mount Vernon, N.Y.-Mount Vernon (Northwest Florida State)) and junior Bryce McBride (Jackson, Tenn.-Southside (Dyersburg State C.C.)) each tallied 12 points. Morgan led the team with five helpers, while McBride drained a team-best three triples.
Eastern Michigan finished the evening with a 36.7 field goal percentage (22-of-60) and drained eight three-pointers. Ball State posted a 52.1 percent field goal efficiency and made 11-of-30 from beyond the arc. The Cardinals won the rebounding battle, 48-to-29, and also dished out 22 assists compared to EMU's 11.
The scoring went back-and-forth to start the first half with the Cardinals taking a 6-5 lead with 17:16 left. Ball State sparked an offensive 7-4 run over the next three minutes to remain in the lead, 13-9. Eastern Michigan struggled to get their offense going as Ball State posted a 14-3 scoring stint to take the 27-12 advantage with 7:32 left in the first 20 minutes of play. To finish the first stanza, BSU went on an 18-6 run over the last six minutes to take the 50-22 lead at half time.
Coming out of the locker room, the Eagles attempted to get the scoring going with a 4-2 run to cut BSU's lead to 54-26. However, the Cardinals continued its energy with a 26-13 run over the next nine minutes to take the 80-38 advantage. Ball State's electric shooting was too much to contain as the Cardinals sealed the 100-65 victory.
Eastern Michigan will conclude the 2020-21 regular-season with a trip to Kalamazoo, Mich. to challenge in-state rival Western Michigan University. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. from University Arena.
